THE OFFBEATS VOCAL ENSEMBLE

The Offbeats Vocal Ensemble begins rehearsing for our November concert, Offbeat Alley: An Evening of Fine Wine and Jazz, on Thursday, September 4, at 7:30 p.m. We perform jazz, Latin, a cappella, and ballads. We have an opening for a tenor. If you have experience singing harmony and good music reading skill, call 206-260-7393, or email seattlegleeclubs@comcast.net, to arrange an audition..

Jazz at Seattle Glee Clubs

Our jazz program started with the creation of a vocal jazz ensemble in 2003 and has since expanded to include small jazz ensembles, a cappella ensembles, and a vocal jazz workshop. Our singers enjoy the rare opportunity of working with some of the best professional jazz musicians in the Seattle area.

The Offbeats Vocal Ensemble

The ensemble central to the jazz program is The Offbeats Vocal Ensemble. The Offbeats are 18 men and women who perform a variety of charts arranged for four to eight parts. They give several performances each year with a professional rhythm section led by renowned jazz pianist, John Hanson. The Offbeats challenges members to perform ever more demanding music, with the goal of regular performance in the community.

Requirements to join

General choral experience and the ability to read music are required. This is a great opportunity to get involved in a high-caliber jazz ensemble and work with some of Seattle's best jazz musicians. Call 206-260-7393.

Where we rehearse

Rehearsals are Thursdays, 7:30 to 9:30 pm, in the Glee Tower at The Luna Park ActivSpace, 3400 Harbor Ave SW.

Directions to the Glee Tower

  1. Take the Harbor Ave exit SW from the West Seattle Bridge. You'll see the Luna Park ActivSpace to your right.
  2. Park in the parking lot and find the elevator across the breezeway from the office.
  3. Press #600 for access. When the elevator arrives, go to the 4th floor.
  4. Follow the hall to your right. When you get to the stairs on your left go up one floor and you're there!

How much does it cost?

Members pay a monthly fee of $50 to cover our expenses: our professional staff, music, hall rentals, instruments, equipment, and day-to-day operating expenses.

Vocal Jazz Workshop

Each Fall, Spring, and Summer Session, Seattle Glee Clubs offers a Vocal Jazz Workshop for six singers with solo performance experience (background in jazz is not required). You'll work on jazz vocal technique with Bert Gulhaugen and jazz styling with pianist John Hansen. For the final performance, you'll sing three songs with the John Hansen Trio at Tula's Nightclub in downtown Seattle. Participants are selected from a rotating list so to get on the list call 206-260-7393.

Jazz and A Cappella Small Ensembles

Some of our more experienced singers enjoy the challenge of singing in small jazz and a cappella ensembles. Rehearsal scheduling is up to the individual ensemble members and coaching is available with John Hansen and Bert Gulhaugen. Well-prepared ensembles are included in the vocal jazz workshop performance at Tula's as well as other Offbeats performances. Talk with The Offbeats' leader, Bert Gulhaugen, if you are interested in a jazz or a cappella small ensemble.
