Car History
I am the
third owner of the car, however, officially the fourth. The car was
originally sold at Performance BMW in Chapel Hill, NC and bought by
Robbin Sharpe of Durham, NC. I have limited information on the
second owner. Based on Carfax report, Mr. Sharpe sold the car privately in
March 2005 with 13,375 miles on the odometer. The second owner was
in South Carolina. The second owner sold the car to Christopher
Taylor in November 2005 with 19,000 miles on the odo. Chris was an
older (40-ish) British expatriate who at that time just moved to
Atlanta with his job. He purchased the car from the second owner
during his move to the U.S. not knowing that his company was
providing him with a company car. Chris did not want to have two
cars and advertised the M Coupe he just purchased 2 weeks prior at Autotrader.com.
I had been
on the market for an M Coupe for 2 months when I saw Chris' ad. I
immediately called him and discussed details of the history and
condition of the car. At that time, I still lived in Omaha,
Nebraska (we now live in Broomfield, CO). After several long discussions, I was convinced that the
car was in excellent condition as advertised and we agreed on a price. I had Chris take the
car for a pre-purchase inspection at BMW of Atlanta and everything
checked out fine. I flew from Omaha to Atlanta the week after, met
Chris, picked up the car, and drove it back to Omaha. Chris put less
than 200 miles in 2 weeks he "owned" the car. Chris registered the
car and had it titled under his name. However, Carfax did not
recognize him as an owner, thus it shows the car has had three
owners. See Carfax report
here.
I had owned a
1999 M3 and a
1996 M3 prior to this
car. I sold the M3 right after getting married. I always wanted a
two-seater coupe before starting a family. The M Coupe is strictly a
weekend, nice-sunny-day car. When not driven, it's parked covered in
our garage. It truly earned its garage-queen title.
I am
a 29-year-old, married, and make a living as an engineer. I love cars
and am passionate about them. I am super anal when it comes to cars. This M
Coupe has never been drag-raced,
stop-light burnt-out, or bounced off the rev limiter. In 2.5 years
of ownership, I participated in one SCCA Autocross event and one
BMWCCA Driving School event. See this
pic on how this car
was preped for a track day to avoid rock chips. I tend to drive
conservative on the road. I do open her up and explore her
capabilities from time to time on weekend canyon drives. I typically
get 24-26 MPG for a mix driving.
I do most maintenance myself. I'd like to
think that by doing the maintenance on my own, I get to know the car
better and am confidence that all the nuts and bolts are torqued to
factory specs.
Reason for
selling? We're having a baby!!!! Yes, the time has come for me to
get and drive a minivan. Just kidding. No, we're not getting a
minivan, but we're looking for something more practical.
Car Condition
Please be
advised that I would consider myself as a perfectionist and overly
anal about cars. I tend to overstate
imperfections and flaws that other people consider as "normal wear
and tear". People have different view of what's considered "normal".
I'd rather overstate all the blemishes and see the buyer happy and excited with what he/she sees. My definition of a "great" paint condition would
be what you would see on a brand new car.
Exterior
-
Overall, the exterior is in immaculate near-showroom condition.
The paint is as shiny as it can be. It still has deep-glossy
finish. There are only 2 rock chips worth noting on the hood.
-
Chris
told me that he believed that the hood and front bumper had been
resprayed by one of previous owners. I specifically asked BMW of
Atlanta to check any sign of accidents during PPI. They removed
the under-hood liner, inspected the hood and front frame, and
could not find any sign of prior accidents. The service advisor
convinced me that the resprayed was very minor and done
professionally. He also assured me that he believed that the
resprayed had not been done within the last several months, as
my fear that Chris himself had them resprayed. The first time I
saw the car, I immediately inspected the hood and bumper, and
was happy with what I saw. I would rate the hood at 9 and the
front bumper at 8. There are two spots on the hood that with the
right viewing angle and certain lighting, you could see very
minor shade disparity. In the 2.5 years of ownership, I managed to
scrape the front bumper three times. The scrapes are not visible
from standing. I would definitely respray the front bumper
again, if I were to keep the car.
-
Windshield: there's one small starburst flake that has been
professionally repaired. It is not in direct driver's line of
sight. However, from certain angles and with sun glaring, it is still visible.
-
Driver
door: There is one 1" scratch which is fairly noticeable towards
the bottom of the door. Please see these
picture 1 and
picture 2.
-
There's 3" curb mark on the rear driver-side wheel which is
hardly noticeable from 4 feet away. This wheel also has two
minor paint chips. All other wheels are in perfect condition.
-
Front
tires: Michelin Pilot Sport 225/45/R17 with
approximately 50% tread remaining.
-
Rear
tires: Michelin Pilot Sport 245/40/R17 with
approximately 60% tread remaining.
-
Tool
and
emergency kits: Complete and all original,
never used.
Interior
-
Overall, the interior is as close as possible to a new showroom
condition. The leather is clean and soft. There's no sign of
wear even on driver seat side bolsters. Please see
pictures.
-
Leather (even on dashboard) is treated regularly with
Leatherique leather care products.
-
Carpet: Nice and clean, there's no mark or stain.
-
Floor
mats: original floor mats are kept in the garage. I covered the
carpet with rubber mats.
-
Headliner: Nice and clean, there's no mark or stain.
-
No
sign of any of the previous owners was a smoker. There's no
smell or odor. The cigarette lighter is clean.
-
Trunk:
one of the previous owners had a yellow lab (I'm guessing) that
liked riding in the back. I cleaned up and vacuumed the trunk
regularly, but even still I see dog's hair here and there.
However, there's no smell, odor, or stain.
-
The
glovebox shows no
sign of sagging.
Drivetrain
-
Engine
is in perfect working order. It does not leak or burn any oil.
-
Transmission is in perfect working order. It shifts fine and
does not leak any fluid. There's no problem in getting into any
gear. Clutch does not show any sign of slipping.
-
Differential is in perfect working order.
-
All in
all, the car is in perfect mechanical condition.
Known
Issues
-
The
auto-dim rear view mirror is not working. This is a common issue
for these cars. You can still use the mirror, however, the
auto-dim function is no longer working. The electrolytic fluid
inside the mirror is not leaking out.
-
When I
first purchased the car, the gas gauge always "danced" between
empty and full for the first 10 miles or so after every fill.
Some people suggested putting in fuel-injector cleaner in the
tank. I did this twice and the problem has not reoccurred.
-
The
battery gauge "dances" back and forth during cold weather. I had
the battery and alternator checked and both were fine. I'm
thinking that this may be caused by a loose wire connection
since the gauge works fine after a light tap. I just haven't had
a chance to pull the gauge out and inspect the connection.
-
The
clutch pedal squeaks especially during cold weather. I was going
to put in UUC clutch pedal bushings, but just never got a chance
to do it.
-
There's a small area of window tint on the passenger window
started bubbling.

Selling Price
Asking
price is $23,000. Yes, my asking price is higher than the average
private party value. The car is in much better condition than an
average M Coupe. Words and pictures cannot describe the love and
time I have dedicated on this car. Reasonable offers would be
considered.
I welcome a pre-purchase inspection (at buyer's
expense) at a BMW dealership or an independent shop.
Bimmerhaus is only 10
minutes away. I will help buyer with shipping arrangement if
necessary.
Would consider a trade with a E46 wagon or E39 wagon (manual only please).
My 1999 M3 was sold to a gentleman in California and
my 1996 M3 to a gentleman in Florida. Please refer to this
Bimmerforum posting
and
this if you want to
contact the buyers of pristine '96 M3 and '99 M3 and get references.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any
question.
