General Description
Its primary element is a strong framework. One end of the framework will have a docking port for attachment to the Service Module, whereas the other one will have a two-stage actuator for orienting solar batteries. The NEP will carry eight, large solar batteries arranged in two batches of four. The first batch will travel into space aboard the space shuttle together with the NEP, whereas the remainder will arrive in orbit in 2002, also on the space shuttle. Among the things to be installed on the Platform are thermal control systems (including a heat-exchanger), an autonomous powerplant system and the ERA manipulator. Some 20 spacewalks will be needed to unfold the solar batteries, install the heat-exchanger and prepare the autonomous powerplant for work.(Russian ISS Modules, Vladimir Karnozov, Launchspace Publications, 1998)
The Energia Rocketry-Space Corporation is tasked with construction of the Scientific Power Platform and two Docking Compartments.(Week of November 23, 1998, Operation Alpha Has Begun, AeroWorldNet)
The SPP components shown above include the unpressureized module section which supprts the solar arrays (not shown) and the radiator for cooling the module and solar arrays
