My name is Chris Bryan. I am a history teacher from Oklahoma. My grandfather , Audie M. Bryan served on the Petrof Bay. He was always a dedicated patriot. We used to talk about his memories of serving during WW II. I would be very interested in being able to visit with any other surviving shipmates if possible.

Im a 24 yr old Army service member and my grandpa served on the Petrof Bay during WWII. He was a gunners mate on one of the ships 40mm pom-pom guns as he calls them, and would tell me stories about how the Japanese shells from their battleships would pass through them without exploding becouse of the carriers thin hull sides. I found your page and started reading it, seein the pictures of some of the crew mwmbers, wondering if my grandpa knew them, and seeing a brief moment in their lives back then. It really makes me feel good to see that people have not forgotten them. I know that I sure havent. His name is Donald Fredrick Holdinghaus. If any body knows him and would like to get in contact with him e-mail me at this adress Ejc42374@aol.com. Also I was wanting to know if there was still a roster of the crewmembers that I can get for him? Thanks for your great page!!

My grandfather, Ray Alred, was awarded the Silver Star for his service on Petrof Bay during WWII. I am looking for anyone who remembers him, or details of serving on the ship. It is an important part of my family history that could easily be lost with the passage of time. My mother has asked me to post messages to see if anyone remembers her father, Ray "Kentucky" Alred, who served in the galley of the Petrof Bay. He was a skinny man with black hair and brown eyes. (He was awarded the Silver Star for actions during battle and we are looking for more information.)

My late father, Lt. Zachary A. Booth, Jr., was a gunnery officer on the Petrof Bay during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. He received the Legion of Merit Award. I would like information about his role in the battle to share with my children and grandchildren. I was very young during the war, and my father was much too modest to brag about the role he must have played. Can anyone shed light or recommend a book that would explain his role to me?
