Boston-based SpoilSport’s debut album, They All Want Cake, is a 43-minute blast of pop-punk that seems destined to be the indie “soundtrack to summer” for 2004. Sounding like a cross between the B-52’s and Pansy Division, the out foursome of bassist Marla Greenman, guitarists Suzanne Hinton and Craig Bostick, and Bostick's partner, drummer Jon Hetman, perform sunny, summery cuts with dark undertones and catchy melodies that will stick in your head for hours (just check out the sing-along choruses of “I Ride the Train” and “Come Over Come Over”). With crunching guitars and driving drums, this fast-and-furious album is poppy enough to be played alongside the best of contemporary modern rock, though its lack of sheen may work against it in these days of prepackaged pop. But if you’re looking for an old-school throwback, this is having your Cake and eating it too. Bryan Buss "The B-52's meet the Ramones and sing songs of summer, boys and candy (and in the case of "Boys On The Beach" boys AS candy). Even when love goes wrong, Spoilsport's songs are upbeat. They're kind of like Cub in that regard, or maybe Lisa Mahr's first post-Cub band, Buck. Forget your diet, indulge in some SpoilSport." "…bouncy pop that sits somewhere between surf and punk…" "Two guys, two gals, sweet melodies, rocking guitars, beach-party "Power pop quartet Spoilsport celebrates the release of its new album, ''They All Want Cake''...Imagine the Go-Go's hiring a male lead singer and adding country songs to their repertoire, and you have an idea of what Spoilsport is all about." [Snowball is an] '80s college rock-influenced "Sounds like a hit to me!" |
