THE HISTORY OF AVALON

'Demonthang' by Peter Bradley, used without permission. THE WAR IN HEAVEN
Apollyon and his forces are defeated and thrown down from the walls of Heaven

THE RULE OF THE FALLEN

Apollyon and his forces fall to Avalon, which creates the Abyss, and enslave the races they find there
THE WAR COMES TO AVALON
Nisroc (Virtue of Freedom) happens upon Avalon and discovers Apollyon and his fiends
Nisroc asks Apollyon to release the races of Avalon, but Apollyon refuses
Nisroc leaves, only to return with Seraphiel and the Host
Apollyon and his fiends fight again, but are defeated once more
Seraphiel binds Apollyon to the World Oak and the Virtues adopt Avalon

THE NEW RACES AND THE RISE OF THE ELVES

The old, slave races were all but wiped out in the Great War, so the Virtues create new races to populate the world
The elves come to worship the World Oak without realizing its nature or significance, devoting themselves to its defense
A red dragon, Helgafel by name, attacks the World Oak maddened by Apollyon's spirit trapped within the tree
Helgafel's attack decimates the elves before the virtues intervene, ending Helgafel's rampage
Apollyon's unconscious, corrupting influence is detected and fearing more and stronger attacks, the virtues teach the elves to harness the power of Creation itself, magic, so that they may protect the World Oak and themselves
The elves take to magic naturally and quickly master their environment and dominate the other races; some of the virtues become concerned but sleeping dogs are left lying

THE FALL OF THE ELVES

Sammael, the fiend of Pride, disguised himself as a great scholar and moved among the elves asking why the virtues were in charge of Avalon and not the elves
Many elves came to agree with Sammael's words and as their magical prowess grew they wondered if, like the winds and the waters, the virtues too could not be yoked by magic
Research into the matter, guided by Sammael's avatar, produced spells that would indeed compel the virtues to obey the will of the elves
The elves summoned and bound many virtues, however, the Virtue of Freedom, Nisroc was unable to be called or bound and at his touch the other virtues where released
The elves realizing their folly, for the virtues are the incarnation of their natures, fell before the virtues in fear and begged forgiveness; the virtues realizing Sammael's part in this stripped the elves of their magical nature - leaving them no more talented than members of the other races - and denied them access to the virtues' power as punishment
Though both the elves and the virtues sought Sammael for judgment, the fiend of Pride escaped without a trace

THE WAR OF AGES

No longer held in check by the powers of the elves, the other races began expanding and the elves' civilization, no longer supported by their high magics, crumbled under the aggressions and population pressures of their neighbors
During this time the alliances and allegiances familiar to those living today were forged; the old races, tricked by Moloch, became bitter and hateful of the 'usurper' races
The so-called 'Races of Anarchy' lead by the fiends of Gluttony and Lust banded together to crush the 'Races of Civilization'
While the 'Races of Civilization' banded together against this threat, in-fighting and forms of conflict occurred; Dagon, the fiend of Anger, appeared and incited both the dwarfs and the elves to commit many atrocities against one another, inspiring the dwarfs' long-held grudge
In time every race of Avalon was at war with every other one in some form or another
The virtues came to see the hand of their long-time enemies in the escalating violence that covered the face of Avalon; they sought out and confronted the fiends wherever they worked to undo the mortal races and in time the machinations of the unholy vices were foiled and the fiends forced back into the Abyss

THE REBUILDING

In the years since the defeat of the fiends and their schemes for destruction, the races have, while clashing occasionally, rebuilt their populations, their cities and their civilizations
This is when the Campaign begins...
