LMA ANNUAL MEETING JULY, 2004
The major business before the LMA was the decision to paint the
Lybarger
Lutheran
Church
. The work was completed by the middle of August for a cost of $3,600 and will
be reported in next year's financial report. The remaining need is to replace
the front door. The church was last painted in 1995. Other actions of the LMA
are found elsewhere in this issue of the newsletter.
2004
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
The recipient of the 2004 Distinguished Service Award went to William
"Bill" Robert Lyberger He was born in
Huntingdon
,
PA
on Dec. I I, 1920 to Mary A Rowe and John W. Lyberger. He marred Dons R.
Gramling in 1941 who bore him Ardith, Arden, and Timothy.
Doris
died in 1969. Bill then married Polly Snodgrass. He assumed the responsibility
for helping to raise 4 of Polly's 6 children along with his son, Tim. In 1970, a
year after
Doris
died, he suffered the loss of his son, Arden, in the Vietnam War (his name is
on the memorial wall in
Washington
,
D.C.
).
Bill served in the Army in
Germany
during World War II. He was active in the
United
Methodist
Church
at
Falls Church
,
VA.
Bill worked as a carpenter and electrician and retired from the General
Services Administration. His hobbies were woodworking and leather work. He loved
to sing and go camping. He died in May, 1999 at
Falls Church
,
VA
One day he received a letter from a Hazel Brown who was searching for a Billy
Lyberger, son of John Lyberger of
Kentucky
. Bill became curious as he had never claimed his family up to this time. He now
wanted to reconnect with his relations in
Pennsylvania
with whom he had lost contract. The end result was that Bill discovered that
his grandfather was Shannon Lybarger
the descendants of whom attended the Lybarger reunions and annual meetings at
Madley
,
PA.
So it is that he became an active supporter of the reunions and the LMA as well
as reuniting with his cousins who were related through
Shannon
.

all those who have made contributions to the LMA. and the church fund the latter
of which are especially appreciated because of the expense of maintaining a 120
year old church It is now to excellent shape what with the new roof added in
2000 for $3,340, repairs to the walk up to the entrance, the sealing of the
window wells, and now the painting of the exterior.
Although there are sufficient funds in the treasury to cover the expenses
we have to be sure that there will be adequate reserves to cover future costs of
the church and of the newsletter, the other major expense of the LMA.
OUR WHITE HOUSE COUSIN
Would you believe It? We are related to Lynne Ann Vincent, the wife of Richard
Cheney, the Vice President of the
United States
. Here is how we are connected. Lynne Vincent is the daughter of Edna Lolita
Lybyer (1919-1973) who was the deputy sheriff of
Casper
,
WY
. She was the daughter of Benjamin Harrison Lybyer (1888-1972), who was born in
Missouri
but died in
Casper
where he was an oil field lease operator. His father, Andrew Simon Peter Lybyer
(1843-1911) was born in
Indiana
but died in
Missouri
. He served in the Civil War for the North as a sergeant in the Indiana Cavalry.
Later he worked as a ranch hand and an oil field worker. His father, Daniel
Solomon Philip Lybarger (1811-1873), was born in
Bedford County
,
PA
and died in
Putnam County
,
IN.
He changed the spelling of his last name to Lybyer. He was Lynne Vincent's
great great grandfather. His father was Ludwick Lybarger (circa 1764-1833) of
Bedford County
,
PA
Ludwick was one of the three brothers of the immigrant ancestor, Nicholas
Leyenberger.
It is interesting to note from this lineage how our ancestors migrated
westward from
Bedford
County
to
Ohio
,
Indiana
or
Illinois
. From there they moved further west as opportunities opened up on expanding
frontier. Lybargers were like thousands of Americans who went by wagon train to
the western country. Obviously, if you are a Lybyer you are more closely related
to Lynne Cheney than the rest of us, but we are all related to her however
distant the connection may be.
The information on Lynne Vincent came from Glenn Byron who notified John L
Lybarger of
Mansfield
,
OH
who operates the Lybarger family history web site. He emailed the newsletter
editor. Lybarger Linkages is now being sent to Lynne Vincent Cheney at the White
House in Washington, D.C. Lynne Vincent and Richard Cheney's names are
documented in the 1997 and 2000 editions of The Lybarger Descendants.
TROLLEY ENTHUSIAST AND
ARCHIVIST
A photograph taken appeared in the March-April. 2003 edition of "Trolley
Fare" magazine. It shows an 8 year old boy observing the arrival of the
interurban trolley as it approached the Cheeseman stop in
Peters
Township
outside
Pittsburgh
,
Pa
on the last day of service on
Aug. 29, 1953
.
That boy was Edward Holmes Lybarger, born Aug. 1945
The photo was taken by the late Samuel Francis Lybarger who was once on
the board of trustees of the Lybarger Memorial Association and a recipient of
LMA's Distinguished Service Award. His son Ed grew up to become the archivist
and exhibits coordinator of the
Pennsylvania
Trolley
Museum
. He is the father of four children including one who is adopted and two who arc
twins.
LYBARGER GROVE SHELTER
COLLAPSES
Last January the roof of the shelter at the Lybarger
reunion picnic grove at
Madley
,
PA
collapsed under the weight of a heavy wet snow storm as seen in the photo
below. Jack Lybarger of
Johnstown
. PA and his son Kurt cleaned away the debris and they purchased and erected a
canvas canope and rehabilitated a sufficient number of the tables so that the
reunion could continue on this past July. The original shelter was built in 1952
using lumber from the Buffington farm.
QUERY FROM PEGGY BUSH JONES
Peggy Bush Jones is involved in research as a secretary for the Genealogical
Society of Allegany County, PA. She is the granddaughter of Sara (Baer) and
Elmer Bush, and the great granddaughter of Amanda Civila Lybarger (1859-1938) of
Somerset Co., PA.. She asked if the LMA was still alive and how she could make a
contribution. She wants to share information and find more living relatives.
Interested relations can contact her at handpjones@hereintown.net
MEET THE NEW LMA BOARD MEMBERS
Two new board members were voted in at the annual meeting of the LMA this past
July. They are Bob Lybarger of Harmony, N.C. and George W. Lybarger of

Lybarger. He was married in December 1971 to Patricia Hegler. Their children

REUNIONS WITHIN A
REUNION
The LMA annual meeting was notable for two extended families that together
comprised half of everyone who attended. The first mini reunion brought together
Kathleen Heckwine and Floyd Lybarger (b.6/1929) of
Illiopolis
,
IL
and their son Douglas (b.8/1967) and his wife Michelle of Dayton. PA. A special
treat were their daughters Alyssa and Jessica and baby Alyssa. Floyd and
Kathleen have been regular attendees at the LMA annual meetings and reunions
The second mini reunion brought together the living adult children of Viola
Vincent and Ralph Lybarger (1896-1955) and their spouses. They were, in order of
birth, Ralph (b.9/1924) and Eleanore Hoffmann from South Bend, IN. Jean
(b.10/1925) and Bob Smith from Apex, N.C. Vera (b.1/1932) and Walter Casto from
Pinehurst NC.; and George (b.6/1935) and Sharon Lee Prange of South Bend, IN.
They had all attended Lybarger annual meetings and reunions in previous years.
They met together at Bedford / Madley because that is where the national
Lybarger reunion was held and also because it was equally distant (475 miles)
between their
homes in
Indiana
and
North Carolina
. They had their own reunion right alongside the larger Lybarger reunion. It
should also be noted that all the men served in either the Marines. Army. Navy,
or Air Force in either World War II or the Korean War.
Jean Smith was instrumental in preparing the newsletters for mass mailing until
she turned the job over to her sister-in-law, Sharon. Jean's son, Brian Smith.
