John Lybarger

 

John Lavern Lybarger was born in Battle Creek, Calhoun Co., Michigan July 20, 1948. He married twice. He married Linda Elaine Gamber in Battle Creek, Calhoun Co., Michigan, May 3, 1969.  She is the daughter of Robert Gamber and Elaine Vick. He married Michiko Fujishima in Battle Creek, Calhoun Co., Michigan, November 10, 1973. Michiko was born in Hikone, Japan. She is the daughter of Shigenore Fujishima and Shige Hayashe. When ten years old she received an award for never having missed a day of school. Came to USA, January 23, 1954. Took Joann as middle name at citizenship. Collector of Fenton Hobnailed Milkglass, Satsuma Pottery, Netsuke and Ivory figurines. Likes to work in her flower gardens. Sometimes enjoy just looking at Antique and Flea Markets but often buy's something. Speaks both Japanese and English fluently. John graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1967. He was selected by his classmates with a partner (Earl Borgman) to represent Battle Creek Central High School in a state-wide automotive troubleshooting competition, sponsored by the Plymouth-Chrysler Corporation. They won second place, (missed first place by 4 seconds), in the state of Michigan. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on August 21, 1967. Served with 8 inch Howitzers in the Communications Platoon in Vietnam in several different locations for nineteen months. He then served with the 11th Marines at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He obtained the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged on August 20, 1971. Awards received: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one silver star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Cross of Gallantry with Palm Cluster, Presidential Unit Citation, Rifle Marksman Badge, and Good Conduct Medal. He worked as an auto mechanic and tow truck driver until November 1972, was then employed by General Motors at the Kalamazoo, Michigan Plant. Transferred to the Mansfield, Ohio plant due to Kalamazoo plant closing in 1994. Collected U. S. mint stamps and uncirculated coins as well as uncirculated one dollar paper currency by signature sets, including silver certificates. Interested in old classic cars, handguns, pin-up art (Vargas), computers and genealogy of the Lybarger family. He is also the co-author of the book The Lybarger Descendants.  He retired from General Motors in May 2006 and is currently living in Battle Creek, Michigan. In 2008 he received the Lybarger Memorial Association Distinguished Service Award.
