Dance and Drill Competition Information
High School Dance Team offers two seasons of competition!
Category (Fall): These competitions are designed to get your dancers out in front of the judges, they are usually very casual, showmanship is the focus.
WILSONVILLE HIGH SCHOOL: Saturday, November 14, 2009!
Categories:
Jazz
Kix
State (Winter): These competitions begin in January. Dance Teams must attend two competitions and Qualify 3 minutes of their state routine to become eligible to attend State Championships. These competitions are for more advanced dancers as they can be stressful. The entire team can travel with us even those not performing!
State competitions are different in that we dance our state routine twice. They offer no category routine submissions.
SHERWOOD HIGH SCHOOL: Saturday, February 6, 2010!
TIGARD HIGH SCHOOL: Saturday, February 13 2010!
State Championships (March): This is our big weekend, unfortunately it is often held either during finals week or Spring Break. We leave the high school in the morning, spend the night in a Portland hotel then come home the next evening. The entire team will travel with us even those not performing!
Qualify- We must receive a minimum SQS (Standard Qualifying Score) of 65 points while performing 2 minutes of our state routine. Read the judges score sheets, look under the box that scores 65 points. This is what is expected to be in our routine. Dance Team has a saying "Box 4 Baby" because everyone shoots for scores under box 4.
Parent Group Volunteer Opportunities. There are lots of opportunities to help support dance team and you will never miss a performance.
Drilldown - first year members compete in novice all others compete in advanced.
Audience etiquette: I am required to share with parents OSAA letter to Dance and Drill Parents. I am supposed to read it to you but I am confident you will glance at this letter and be a supportive audience member. There is good information on this page - for example you are welcome to take pictures and video tape you dancer during performance.
The first is hard for many parents to get used to.
Dancers will not be available to parents during the day of a competition - teams are welcome to bring 5 room mom's (see Parent Group Volunteer Page). In some cases we can have lunch in an open cafeteria and parents are welcome to visit and even eat lunch! Please respect the team and your coach. Do not ask your dancer to meet you for pictures, do not try to sneak into the dressing rooms, do not call your dancer on her cell phone. Instead; make a huge poster with her name on it and wave it when we come out, send flowers to our room, sneak a note into her lunch box, decorate your car and follow the bus home honking - these are all wonderful ways to support your dancer!
Cell phones: I understand parents want to make contact with their dancer. I will allow a quick call, during these times:
when we arrive at our destination
between rounds
when the bus gets to Sherwood dancers can call home
Dancers must ride the bus to and from competition.
Dancer must bring costume and all accessories. When in doubt bring everything and use a rolling suitcase!
Dancer must bring all hair items (hair spray, bobby pins, pony bands, comb, brush, gel, etc)
Dancers must bring foundation, eye liner, mascara and false lashes.
Optional items: blanket, pillow, stuffed animal, color book, food, Mp3 player (the rooms are usually locked, nothing too valuable).
Dancers will always travel in blue tank shirt and black jazz pants with Warm-ups over.
Dancers must bring a small amount of money for fast food dinner or concessions.
