Republican National
Committee picks new Chairman
 |
Republicans on Friday elected former Maryland
Lt. Gov. Michael Steele as the new Chairman of the Republican National Committee. Steele
won out over incumbent Michael Duncan and four other candidates for the position of head
of the Republican Party. After five rounds of voting, only Steele and South Carolina GOP
Chairman Katon Dawson remained standing in contention. Steele gained the necessary votes
in the sixth round. He will serve a two year term. Although he is considered to be a
conservative, most agreed that he was the most moderate of all of the candidates who were
running for the position. |

Is the Honeymoon Coming to an End?
According to the latest Rasmussen survey, as reported at Free Republic,
Americans support for President Obamas $900 billion Economic Stimulus Package
has dropped from 45% to 42% during the past week, while opposition to the Bill rose from
34% to 39%. Currently 19% are undecided, down from 21%. The survey also found that 46% of
Americans think that the administrations plan will do too much, while 42% believe it
will do too little. Apparently, the remaining 12% did not understand the question.
Survey details are available at rasmussenreports.com.
Will these latest figures bring about a reduction in the
enormous size of the pork-bar
oops,
I mean, economic stimulus legislation? Probably not. At best, they may strengthen the
spines of some Senate Republicans who would otherwise never let principle stand in the way
of doing what was deemed popular with the swirling masses. Who knows, even John McCain
might now oppose the package when it comes to a showdown vote.
By now, everyone is aware of what took place earlier this
week over in the House of Representatives. barred from having little if any voice in
crafting the Stimulus Bill by the dictatorial procedural rules imposed by House Fuehrer
Nancy Pelosi, House Repub- licans, joined by 11 Democrats, decided instead to achieve the
small victory of denying the Bill any modicum of bipartisanship by voting unanimously
against it. If Senate Republicans can duplicate this feat, the Economic Stimulus Package
of 2009, with its massive increases in the National Debt, will belong completely to the
Democrats. It will be totally up to them to explain this debacle to voters in 2010 and
2012, and to the future generations of Americans who will be picking up the tab while at
the same time trying to determine how to save Social Security and Medicare. What could be
described as being almost humorous if it were not so serious, too many of todays
politicians, both Democrats and Republicans, do not care, simply because they will not be
running for re-election at that time.
What is vexing to the American public is the recent news
concerning the use of the bailout money that has already been given to financial
institutions. Reports that it was used to purchase new corporate airplanes, refurbish a
CEOs office, and to pay corporation officers large bonuses despite incompetent
performance make further belated Christmas presents from the government questionable to
say the least.
Nothing expresses this discontent better than an attachment
to an e-mail that I recently received from a fellow conservative. The attachment were two
purported letters regarding the bailout of the major auto companies. I have not been able
to verify the authenticity of the letters, but that is not what is important here. Rather,
what is important is the type of thinking that seems to prevail in America today. For the
simple reason that I cannot vouch for the letters authenticities, I will change the
names from those that appeared in the message that I received.
Letter #1
Dear Employees & Suppliers,
Congress and the current Administration will soon determine whether
to provide immediate support to the domestic auto industry to help it through one of the
most difficult economic times in our nation's history. Your elected officials must hear
from all of us now on why this support is critical to our continuing the progress we began
prior to the global financial crisis....
As an employee or supplier, you have a lot at stake and continue to
be one of our most effective and passionate voices. I know [the company] can count on you
to have your voice heard.
Thank you for your urgent action and ongoing support.

President [Company A] |
Letter #2 (A supplier's response)
Response from:
G. K., President
[Company B]
[Anytown], Ohio
Gentlemen:
In response to your request to contact legislators and ask for a
bailout for the Big Three automakers please consider the following, and please pass my
thoughts on to [John Doe], President of [Company A].
Politicians and Management of the Big 3 are both infected with the
same entitlement mentality that has spread like cancerous germs in UAW halls for the last
countless decades, and whose plague is now sweeping this nation, awaiting our new
"messiah", President Obama, to wave his magic wand and make all our problems go
away, while at the same time allowing our once great nation to keep "living the
dream"... Believe me folks, The dream is over!
This dream where we can ignore the consumer for years while
management myopically focuses on its personal rewards packages at the same time that our
factories have been filled with the worlds most overpaid, arrogant, ignorant and laziest
entitlement minded "laborers" without paying the price for these
atrocities...this dream where you still think the masses will line up to buy our products
for ever and ever.
Don't even think about telling me I'm wrong. Don't accuse me of not
knowing of what I speak. I have called on Ford, GM, Chrysler, TRW, Delphi, Kelsey Hayes,
American Axle and countless other automotive OEM's throughout the Midwest during the past
30 years and what I've seen over those years in these union shops can only be described as
disgusting.
[John Doe], President of [Company A], states: "There is
widespread sentiment throughout this country, and our government, and especially via the
news media, that the current crisis is completely the result of bad management which it
certainly is not."
You're right Mr. [Doe], it's not JUST management...how about the
electricians who walk around the plants like lords in feudal times, making people wait on
them for countless hours while they drag ass...so they can come in on the weekend and make
double and triple time...for a job they easily could have done within their normal 40 hour
work week.
How about the line workers who threaten newbies with all kinds of
scare tactics...for putting out too many parts on a shift...and for being too productive.
We certainly must not expose those lazy bums who have been getting overpaid for decades
for their horrific underproduction, must we? Do you folks really not know about this
stuff?
How about this great sentiment abridged from Mr. [Doe]'s sad plea:
"over the last few years...we have closed the quality and efficiency gaps with our
competitors." What the hell has Detroit been doing for the last 40 years?!? Did we
really JUST wake up to the gaps in quality and efficiency between us and them? The K car
vs. the Accord? The Pinto vs. the Civic?!? Do I need to go on? What a joke!
We are living through the inevitable outcome of the actions of the United
States auto industry for decades. It's time to pay for your sins, Detroit.
I attended an economic summit last week where brilliant economist,
Alan Beaulieu, from the Institute of Trend Research, surprised the crowd when he said he
would not have given the banks a penny of "bailout money".
"Yes, he said, this would cause short term problems," but
despite what people like politicians and corporate magnates would have us believe, the sun
would in fact rise the next day... and the following very important thing would
happen...where there had been greedy and sloppy banks, new efficient ones would pop
up...that is how a free market system works...it does work...if we would only let it
work..."
But for some nondescript reason we are now deciding that the rest of
the world is right and that capitalism doesn't work - that we need the government to step
in and "save us"...Save us my ass, Hell - we're nationalizing...and
unfortunately too many of our once fine nation's citizens don't even have a clue that this
is what is really happening...But, they sure can tell you the stats on their favorite
sports teams...yeah - THAT'S really important, isn't it... Does it ever occur to ANYONE
that the "competition" has been producing vehicles, EXTREMELY PROFITABLY, for
decades in this country?... How can that be??? Let's see... Fuel efficient... Listening to
customers...Investing in the proper tooling and automation for the long haul...Not being
too complacent or arrogant to listen to Dr. W. Edwards Deming four decades ago when he
taught that by adopting appropriate principles of management, organizations could increase
quality and simultaneously reduce costs. Ever increased productivity through quality and
intelligent planning... Treating vendors like strategic partners, rather than like
"the enemy"... Efficient front and back offices... Non union environment...
Again, I could go on and on, but I really wouldn't be telling anyone
anything they really don't already know down deep in their hearts. I have six children, so
I am not unfamiliar with the concept of wanting someone to bail you out of a mess that you
have gotten yourself into - my children do this on a weekly, if not daily basis, as I did
when I was their age. I do for them what my parents did for me (one of their greatest
gifts, by the way) - I make them stand on their own two feet and accept the consequences
of their actions and work through it.
Radical concept, huh... Am I there for them in the wings? Of course -
but only until such time as they need to be fully on their own as adults
.
I don't want to oversimplify a complex situation, but there certainly
are unmistakable parallels here between the proper role of parenting and government. Detroit
and the United States need to pay for their sins.
Bad news people - it's coming whether we like it or not. The newly
elected Messiah really doesn't have a magic wand big enough to "make it all go
away." I laughed as I heard Obama "reeling it back in" almost immediately
after the final vote count was tallied..."we really might not do it in a year...or in
four..." Where the Hell was that kind of talk when he was RUNNING for office.
Stop trying to put off the inevitable folks ...
That house in Florida really isn't worth $750,000...
People who jump across a border really don't deserve free health care
benefits...
That job driving that forklift for the Big 3 really isn't worth
$85,000 a year...
We really shouldn't allow Wal-Mart to stock their shelves with
products acquired from a country that unfairly manipulates their currency and has the most
atrocious human rights infractions on the face of the globe...
That couple whose combined income is less than $50,000 really
shouldn't be living in that $485,000 home...
Let the market correct itself folks - it will. Yes it will be
painful, but it's gonna' be painful either way, and the bright side of my proposal is that
on the other side of it all, is a nation that appreciates what it has...and doesn't live
beyond its means...and gets back to basics...and redevelops the patriotic work ethic that
made it the greatest nation in the history of the world...and probably turns back to God.
Sorry - don't cut my head off, I'm just the messenger sharing with
you the "bad news". I hope you take it to heart.
G.K., President

Perhaps the Federal Government does have
an obligation to correct the irrational decisions made in the 1970s and again in the 1990s
to put people into homes that they could not afford to pay for, then to block efforts to
more closely regulate the financial institutions that were playing fast and loose with the
mortgages and securities that resulted from those irrational decisions. However, it is not
the government that will suffer. The American taxpayer will pay, both now and in the
future because, in reality, it is the taxpayers who have the money, not the government. On
the other hand, maybe some good will come of it if we, the taxpayers, get a little smarter
about how we vote when we go to the polls to elect those people who make the decisions.
Lets hope so.

Turning the Screws, Part II
The Presidents Stimulus Spending Bill includes providing $5.2
billion for the activist organization ACORN, to mention just one abhorrent factor in the
Bill. I have therefore decided to modify my proposal introduced in my article Turning the Screws, below. The new arrangement is
this. If even a single Republican senator votes in support the Stimulus Bill with that
provision still included, and that Republican is allowed to remain a member in good
standing in the Republican Party for more than a month (allowing for whatever
parliamentary process is required to dismiss him or her), I will henceforth withhold any
donations or contributions whatsoever to any or all Republican Party organizations until
such time as said senator is denied party funding and is defeated in his or her next
primary election.
The time for Republicans to come together is now, rather than after
this Bill is passed. Now is the time to send a new message to America.
Meanwhile, I strongly praise and commend the House Republicans for
voting en masse against the Bill. It feels good to be a proud Republican once again, at
least for now.
I hope that many of my fellow Republicans will join me in this
effort.

Another "Day That Will Live in Infamy"
January 28, 2009. Remember this date, Americans. Remember it as the
date when a Democratic House of representatives approved a boondoggle $900 billion
spending bill that will do very little to accomplish its intentionally misstated purpose,
that being, to provide relief to an economy in recession. It should be renamed the Pork
Bill of 2009, or the Beginning of the End for Democrats Bill. Remember it in 2010,
Americans. Remember that every Republican in the House voted against it; not MOST
Republicans, but EVERY Republican. And they were joined by 11 Democrats, placing the
bipartisan label on the wrong side of the vote from the Presidents and
the Speakers perspectives. Lest you forget the date and what happened before the
2010 election rolls around, we will send out occasional reminders.
Unfortunately, I am not convinced that all of the Republicans in the
Senate have the same courage, convictions, and intelligence to vote against the Bill when
it comes to a vote in that august body. There is little doubt that the president will
offer a change here and there to the House Bill to make some Republicans wobbly. There are
also a few who have never seen a big-spending bill that they didnt like, and some
who think that across-the-aisle cooperation on issues such as this to be, for some unknown
reason, admirable. Remember these people as well, Americans, in 2010.

Turning the Screws
I assumed that, after November 4, the telephone calls from various
Republican or conservative groups seeking monetary contributions would end. Instead,
although they have decreased, a few are still coming. An example is a call that I received
last week from the National Republican
Congressional Committee (NRCC)
seeking my support. Although I have supported the NRCC in the past, I felt that budgetary
considerations prohibited me to do so this time, inasmuch as I had just made, what for me,
was a significant contribution to another group.
Had I thought about it at the time, however, or if they call again,
my response would sound something like this. I will start out with a commitment for
X dollars, to be paid after the vote is taken on the Democrats $825 billion stimulus
package. However, for every Republican in the House that votes in favor of the Bill, I
will deduct Y dollars from my contribution. For every Republican Senator that supports it,
I will triple the amount of the deduction. Whatever is left is yours to keep.
My reasoning is this. If any senators or representatives buck the
partys opposition to the stimulus package, the NRCC is not doing its job and should
not be rewarded. There have been enough rewards given for incompetency in the first
bailout package--a boondoggle that is contrary to conservative principles. Secondly, those
Republicans in Congress who vote in support of the Bill have not earned my continued
support, and I refuse to provide it.
I believe that if enough conservatives in America who would adopt
this approach when solicited to support Republican congressional organizations such as the
NRCC, it would send a loud and clear message to the partys leaders that we expect
them to become more effective in bringing about party unity.
This strategy will not prevent the Bill from being approved in the
House of Representatives, but it could preclude its passage in the Senate if party unity
were to be achieved. The question remains, is the partys leadership sufficiently
effective to bring this about? If it is not, my message to them will be, Dont
call me, I'll call you.

A Speech That All Americans Should
See and Hear
For many Americans, speaking out against Islamic extremism is not
considered to be fashionable, especially in this new era of change and
hope. It does not fit into the conceptual mold of political
correctness, which is rapidly replacing freedom of speech and rational expression
that have formed the bulwark of American discourse for well over two hundred years.
This article will even be considered by some to be just another
example of fear-mongering, the favorite term of those who are either too
preoccupied to consider the threat or so naively idealistic that they believe that if we
were more responsible world citizens, that there would be no problem.
However, for the rational thinker, the video that is linked below
presents a realistic appraisal of the threat that western civilization faces today,
presented by a person who personally lived through the realities of that threat. It
presents a woman who was born and raised as a Christian in Lebanon, speaking before the
Heritage Foundation on September 27, 2006. The woman is Brigite Gabriel, who is described
by the Heritage Foundation as:
| [A] journalist
and news producer who started her career as an anchor for World News,
an evening Arabic news broadcast throughout the Middle East. She reported on the Israeli
security zone in Lebanon and the Palestinian uprising in the West Bank as they unfolded.
As a terrorism expert and the founder of the non-profit organization, American
Congress for Truth, she speaks regularly on topics related to the Middle East on
television and radio and lectures nationally and internationally. |
Ms. Gabriel speech was entitled
Because They Hate: A Survivor of Islamic
Terror Warns America. This is the same title as a book that she has authored.
The video takes almost an hour in its entirety, the last thirty minutes of which is a
question and answer session with her audience. It can be seen in its entirety at the Heritage Foundation website.
Although she makes many
salient points in her speech, there were two that were most important in my opinion.
Although she mentioned it only briefly in the question and answer session, what we see
taking place in Europe today is exactly the same as took place with disastrous results in Lebanon
during her childhood. She stated that Europe is rapidly becoming Eurabia,
thanks to its tolerant and liberal policies of encouraging Middle Eastern immigrants to
migrate to Europe. As happened in Lebanon, the fast-growing Muslim community is gradually
approaching the time when it outnumbers the Europeans themselves. Although she does not
mention it in her presentation, the results of this policy are already being seen. Just
recently, Shariah law became a legal alternative to British Common Law by the
government there. In the Netherlands, a
court has ordered prosecutors to put a right-wing politician, Freedom
Party leader Geert Wilders, on trial for making
anti-Islamic statements in a controversial film equating Islam with violence,
according to the BBC. In France, there are suburban Paris
neighborhoods where even the police are afraid to enter. Ms. Gabriel points out that by
the year 2050, the Muslim population in Denmark will exceed that of the native Danes.
The second major point of her speech is that it is past time for
moderate Muslims, especially those in America, to stand up and condemn the activities of
their counterparts who are promoting Islamic Jihad. Extremist Muslims, she says,
constitute only 1 to 30 percent of the 1.2 billion Muslims worldwide, but the remaining
moderate Muslims, for the most part, have been silent. She was especially critical of
American groups such as CAIR (Council on
American-Islamic Relations) who usually seem more concerned with explaining away and
supporting extremists activities than they are on soundly criticizing them for their
behavior. In fact, according to the website report posted by an organization named Anti-CAIR:
Federal Bureau of
Investigation recorded evidence places CAIR founders Omar Ahmad and Nihad Awad at a Philadelphia
meeting of the radical Muslim Brotherhood's "Palestine Committee". According to
the FBI, "all attendees of this meeting are Hamas members or sympathizers."
An Investigative Project on
Terrorism report on the HLF trial reveals that FBI agent Lara Burns testified CAIR's Omar
Ahmad was "a leader of the Palestinian committee". |
Meanwhile,
many Americans, including some easily duped members of Congress, defend CAIR as being a
staunch defender of Muslims civil rights in America.
This is a long video
presentation, and unless you have an hour to spare, you might check back later. Ms.
Gabriel is so compelling as a speaker that you might find it difficult to leave once the
video begins. It is, however, a presentation that all Americans should see and hear,
especially if they believe that the threat facing us is not serious or worth their time. I
am sure that Daniel Pearl and Nicholas Berg would agree in this assessment.

Edward Michael, who was born in Egypt and now resides in Canada, for bringing this video
to my attention. Mr. Michael was raised as a Coptic Christian who, like Ms. Gabriel,
witnessed the horror and intolerance that non-Muslims regularly encounter in the Muslim
world. I would also like to thank Nancy Lee Garcia of Superior, Montana, who first
received the link to the video and forwarded it to me.
