It is uncertain exactly where the land entitled "Mountain Home" is, however, Charles Miles was buried in Clarksburg, upper Montgomery County, Maryland, which must have been near by. Charles Miles' daughter Jemima married John Duckett King, whose farm in King's Valley became known in later generations as Kingstead.

Charles Miles of Mountain Home

11 November 1760 - 1 April 1842

Charles Miles, born 11 Nov 1760, died 1 Apr 1842 in Clarksburg, Montgomery County, Maryland.(1) At the time of his death he lived on Mountain Farm, consisting of 300 acres. He was the son of John Miles, who d. in Prince Georges County, and Rebecca Orme, daughter of Moses Orme and Anne McNew.

First Marriage -- Elizabeth Pool.

On 31 July 1781(2) at the age of 21, Charles Miles married Elizabeth Pool, a possible daughter of Basill Poole, II, who owned part of the land tract called Cowpasture.

Elizabeth Pool's Ancestry. Elizabeth Pool has a very interesting ancestry if the weak links can be proven. First, she is believed to be a daughter of Basill Poole, II, however this is unproven. Basill was the second of three Pools's named Basil, the earliest of which married Lowis Shipley, granddaughter of Adam. Assuming this connection, Elizabeth Pool was a third cousin of Nancy Hanks, mother of Abraham Lincoln. See Russell I. Poole's site at Pool Family Page.

1. Elizabeth Pool, b. abt 1763 married Charles Miles, b. 1760

2. Bassil Pool, Jr, b. abt 1726.

4. Bassil Pool, b. abt 1692, d. abt 1770, Anne Arundel Co

5. Lowis Shipley, b. abt 1708.

10. Richard Shipley, born near Annapolis about 1677, d. 24 Oct 1725

11. Susanna Stevens, m. abt 1703

20. Adam Shipley, born Anne Arundel Co about 1657, d. before 1698, Anne Arundel Co.

21. Lois, d. About 1725

Lois is sometimes thought to be the daughter of Cornelius Howard, however there is no evidence to support this other than the purchase by Adam of land that Cornelius had owned.

In 1783, at age 23 and two years after his marriage, Charles Miles was on the Tax List of "Paupers or Persons Not Liable To Taxation," in Linganore and Sugarland Hundred (Dist 3), Montg. Co. At that time he lived on 300 acre Mountain Farm.

In 1790, at age 30, the Charles Miles household was reported by the Census with 1 male over 16 (born before 1774), plus 2 under (born since 1774) and 4 females, 11 slaves in Montgomery County next to Elisha Walker & Edward King.(3)

The 1795 Tax Assessment showed that Charles Miles owned part of Cowpasture -- the land tract that his father-in-law Basil Poole had owned. Charles Miles' will, however, states he purchased the 160 a. willed to son Samuel's descendants from Henry Griffith, and the 90 a. willed to son Allen from Arnola T. Windsor.

Elizabeth Pool died before 1795, 14 years after her marriage to Charles Miles, and after bearing six children -- Jemima, Delilah, Acona, Samuel, Charles, and Elizabeth.

Second Marriage -- Elizabeth Beall.

On 21 Nov 1795(4) 35 year old Charles Miles married 31 year old Elizabeth Beall, born about 1764 and daughter of Lawson 'Losson' Beall, born 1746, and died by 26 July 1793.

Elizabeth Beall's ancestor table displays as follows:

1. Elizabeth Beall, b. about 1764

2. Lawson "Losson" Beall, b. about 1746 and d. by 26 July 1793, lived on "Addition:

4. John Beall, b.1700, lived on Godfather's Gift and d. 1766,

5. Elizabeth Cameron, m. 1720

8. Robert "The Scotsman" Beall, Immigrant, b. 1670, d. 1748.

Elizabeth was quite possibly the same Elizabeth who was age 12 in 1776, Lower Potomack Hundred(5)

Elizabeth's Land Transactions. Elizabeth is involved in several land transactions taking care of her father's estate. On 30 Mar 1795, prior to her marriage, Elizabeth was shown as Elizabeth Beall in a land transaction in which her brothers and sisters Richard Beall, Elizabeth Beall, Amelia Beall, Lucretia Beall, Solomon and Charlotte Myers and Margaret Beall convey to Peter Kemp of Fred. Co. 4 3/4 acres Snowdens Mill Land. (MCLO 6:24; Heterick III:7)

On 15 March 1798, following Elizabeth's marriage to Charles Miles, Richard Beall, Amelia Beall, Solomon and Charlotte Myers, Charles and Elizabeth Miles, Margaret Beall, John and Lucretia Gartrell convey to Absolom Beddo "Addition to Ausburthen" (MCLO H: ; Heterick III:7) on the Paint Branch; and on 19 June 1798 Charles Miles and Elizabeth his wife and Amelia Beall for £33 money of Maryland convey to Richard Beall of Lawson tract Snowdens Mill Land. (MCLO H:180; Heterick III:8)

Charles Miles and his estate were named as grantors and grantees in 20 land records recorded from 1798 to 1860 in Montgomery Co, MD. (Mrs. Burgess, cited by Hoskinson).

By 1803, seven years and three children after her marriage, Charles Miles' second wife Elizabeth Beall also was dead.

Third Marriage -- Mary "Polly" Layton.

On Dec 29 1803 Charles Miles married Mary "Polly" Layton, whose ancestor table is as follows:

1. Mary "Polly" Layton

2. Ashur (Ashfor) Layton (Immigrated from Penna; bought land Frederick Co, 1773)

3. Sarah "Sally" Ward.

6. Edward Ward, Revolutionary War Soldier

With Polly Layton, Charles Miles had five more children. In all, his children were born beginning in 1782 and ending in 1815, a span of 33 years.

Will On 25 January 1842, Charles Miles recorded his will. He must have died shortly thereafter, for his will was proved 5 Apr 1842 (MC Wills X:426; Heterick III:8) Witnesses were his son in law John R. Layton, husband of Elizabeth Ann; and his son James H. Miles
