Chemical Reactions and Equations        Carbon Chemistry

Nuclear Chemistry                                      Technology in Science

Expectations:

Every student enrolled in this class has the ability to understand the basic principles and concepts that we will study in this course. Success, however, will depend upon the effort that you are willing to exert and your willingness to accept challenges and to attempt to solve problems.

Chemistry is a laboratory science. Its principles have been discovered through experimentation; as such, experiments and demonstrations will be the focus of this course. This course is designed to elicit your participation. Be patient and try to understand the material and not rely on memorization. Work hard in the course and I hope that you will find it satisfying and enjoyable.

Class Objectives

1.      To teach you a broad knowledge of chemistry to use as a basis for further scientific study.

2.      To teach you organizational skills that you will need in order to become successful in future endeavors.

3.       To teach you how to work successfully with others, another skill  employers  look for.

4.       To teach you problem solving techniques which you can use

throughout  your life, inside and out side school.

            Homework:

You are responsible for completing all assignments on time. Any assignments that are due must be handed in within a minute after the period begins; if it is not handed in by this time it will be marked “LATE” and the grade will be awarded at my discretion . (MOST TIMES THIS MEANS YOU WILL RECEIVE A ZERO FOR A GRADE).I rarely give a lot of homework. Most of the work will be done in class.

All work, with the exception of group assignments, is expected to be your own. Do not copy assignments from other students. Both papers will receive a 50% deduction in such cases.

            Quizzes:

Some quizzes in the class will be open note. You are allowed to use only your own materials on the quiz. If you forgot to bring these materials to class you will not be allowed to go to your locker to get them. You can expect to be quizzed at least one time/week. Each quiz will cover and/orthe material we are covering in the class at the time.

Laboratory:

We will be doing many experiments during the semester. Every student will be responsible for practicing lab safety and cleaning all equipment used during the experiment. Failure to follow those rules will result in a zero on the lab and possible exclusion from all other experiments. Exclusion earns you an alternative assignment for each lab done without you due 2 days from the completion of each lab. Usually that means a 2000 word report of my choosing. Each member of the lab group is required to complete his or her own copy of the lab in the notebook provided.

 All labs will be graded by the following rubric.

Laboratory Notebook Rubric

5 %     Table of Contents updated, all pages numbered, Title of Lab/Activity present, Date of Lab/Activity present, Lab

            Partners names listed.

10%    Objective and Procedure Sections present

60%    Data- neatly presented and complete. All graphs are done on separate pages, and all tables have straight lines (use rulers)

25%    Conclusion- complete and a reasonable attempt was made at answering the questions probed by the activity.

            Exams:

An exam will be given at the end of each chapter. These exams will consist of multiple choice, true and false, and short answer. The exam may be given on the computer. This program gives partial credit for your answers. If a computer is not available a pen and paper format will be utilized. Each exam will cover the material covered in the class for each chapter.

A cumulative midterm and/or final exam will be given where required.

            Grades:

                        Your term grade will be determined approximately as follows:

                                    Laboratory notebooks         20 %

                                    Assignments                         10 %

                                    Exams                                    70 %

                        The following grading scale will be used to determine all grades

                        Through out the semester:

                                    A = 90-100 %

                                    B = 80 – 89 %

                                    C = 70 – 79 %

                                    D = 60 – 69 %

                                    F = Below 60 %

            Materials:

                        Bring the following materials to each class:

            Pen or Pencil Lab/Activity Notebook

            Scientific Calculator (when needed)   Chemistry Book

            Tardies and Un-excused Absences:

I will follow school policy for tardies and absences. Review these policies In your student handbook.  YOU WILL NEED A PASS TO ENTER OR LEAVE MY CLASSROOM  AFTER THE BELL RINGS !!!! If you are not here for attendance and you should be, I will write you up even if you are at the nurse. Make sure I know where you are !!!

Make-Up Work:  IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY  to get all make-up assignments  and arrange times to make up quizzes or activities/labs or exams. This work must be turned in within 2 days of an absence unless you get my permission. If you have an un-excused absence, your work is due with that of the other students in the class.
