Competition Arena Synopses

ARENA 1: THE SHOWTIME CHALLENGE

The Pirates of Parody

Your team's challenge prior to the competition is to create a four to five minute humorous skit that is a parody of a well-known literary work about a pirate or pirates. You must include:

• A reading from the literary work you have chosen.
• A prop with an unexpected use
• A flamboyant costume
• An event or character from another well-known literary work about a pirate
• A surprise ending

ARENA 2: THE ENGINEERING FEATS CHALLENGE

Sea How They Sail…

Your team's challenge prior to the competition is to create a four to five minute skit that is centered on a team-created sailing ship. Your ship must:

• Be powered by a team-created, noncommercial, pneumatic source
• Appear to sail on the ocean
• Travel in a triangle with stops at an island, the mainland, and the sea/ocean

ARENA 3: THE FINE TUNING CHALLENGE

Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of ?

Your team's challenge prior to the competition is to create a four to five minute skit based on your version of a popular sea shanty. Your team-created Jolly Roger will carry the same theme. Your presentation must include:

• A musical performance of your chosen sea shanty with team-created lyrics
• An original "pirate" working dance
• A Jolly Roger that represents your shanty in an artistic form
• A sales pitch for something

ARENA 4: THE PERSPECTIVE CHALLENGE

Bird's Eye View

Your team's challenge prior to the competition is to create a four to five minute humorous skit that is based on the perspective of a pirate's parrot. The skit must include:

• A talking parrot
• A bird with a unique ability (other than speech)
• An inanimate object that "comes to life" and then reverts to inanimate more than once during the performance
• An unusual "natural phenomenon"
