Tin Extinguisher

Tin extinguishers were small cylinders ranging in length from 10 to 22 inches

introduced in the late 1800's. Going along with the advertising ideas of the period, they

often depicted scenes of fires or eye catching colors and designs. They contained a white

powder, sodium bicarbonate, ordinary baking soda. They were hung on the wall by a ring

attached to the cover. When pulled down, the cover came off and the extinguishing

powder was then shaken or thrown by the handful at the fire.
