Inverse Heat Conduction - Ill-Posed Problems
by J. Beck, B. Blackwell and C. St. Clair, published by
Wiley-Interscience, 1985.
This book discusses the inverse heat conduction problem, which is a
special case of function estimation, where an unknown function (heat flux history in this case) is found
through utilization of indirect measurements (temperature). The presence of errors in the
measurements as well as the ill-posed nature of the problem lead to "estimates" rather than the "true"
surface heat flux values being calculated. This book is currently out of print but a spiral-bound
copy is available from Beck Engineering Consultants Company for $40
plus $10 shipping in the USA. For other countries, please contact us.
Parameter Estimation
by J.V. Beck and K.J. Arnold, published by Wiley, 1977.
This book discusses
the field of parameter estimation where parameters within a mathematical model are estimated through indirect
measurements. As with the inverse heat conduction problem, the estimation of the parameters is hindered
due to the presence of measurement errors. This book discusses numerous techniques, including the method of
Least Squares, Maximum Likelihood and MAP estimation using prior information. This book is currently
out of print but a spiral-bound copy is available from Beck Engineering
Consultants Company for $40 plus $10 shipping in the USA. For other countries, please contact us.
Heat Conduction Using Green's Functions
by J. Beck, K. Cole, A. Haji-Sheikh, and B. Litkouhi, published
by Hemisphere, 1992.
This book simplifies and organizes the solution of heat conduction and
diffusion problems and makes them more accessible. This is accomplished using the method of Green's
functions, together with tables of these functions and related integrals. This book was originally
intended as a reference volume, but has also been developed into a treatise from a Green's function
perspective. This book is available through Amazon.com for
$92.95 in hardcover.
