Next, let's get our hands wet learning to measure water transparency with a Secchi disc.
Then, we each collect drifting organisms using a variety of plankton nets.

PEEKING AT PLANKTON
The term plankton broadly identifies a world of bizarre creatures barely visible to the naked

eye. Among these microscopic organisms are, newly hatched octopus waving tiny tentacles,
plants which glow in the dark, larval snails that swim, and tiny jellyfish which hunt and spear
larval crabs. By viewing our live plankton samples under a specially designed video
microscope, we can watch these startling creatures on high resolution TV monitors.
Led by our shipboard educators, learn the names, habits, and peculiarities of these intricate
organisms….Next it’s your turn. Proceed to our lab’s stereo microscopes where you will
individually sort, identify and discuss your plankton "catch" with our biologists.

"I learned many new things yesterday. It seems amazing that all that life could be in a drop of water. It was fascinating to have a hands-on experience with the sea animals and the plants…"Yoon Park, student
