Freedom in the Courts

Most Slaves found freedom by escape, death of an owner manumitting them in wills, or through the Gradual Emancipation Act. Some gained freedom by suits filed against their owners.  The cases below concern Slaves who were illegally brought into the State of Pennsylvania after 1780 and found their freedom in the courts.

Cassandra and Lydia Pennsylvania vs Aberilla Blackmore Westmoreland, now Washington County.

John, a Negro man against Benoni Dawson Westmoreland now Beaver County.
