"Blue-eyed Baby"      Copyright 2000 Jacqueline S. Levy

Gregory Mendel, a monk growing beans,
Taught us all the fundamental facts about genes.
Despite complex combinations in our DNA,
My husband and I know we're correct
Regarding one trait in the babe we expect.

A blue-eyed guy, a blue-eyed gal
Have one guarantee:
There's a blue-eyed baby in me.

He or she might someday be massive and tall.
Or possibly the opposite: slender and small.
Olive-skinned or freckled.  Hair from blonde to black.
A nose that we can't give back.

But we rely on what we learned
In biology:
There's a blue-eyed baby in me.

The quiet type or full of hype -- it's anyone's guess.
Conservative and thrifty, or prone to excess.
Someone who always gives folks a fair shake,
        Or maybe a total flake.

What if our sweet young honey
Thinks that our jokes aren't funny?

We can't predict a single thing
Except as you'll see:
There's a blue-eyed baby in me.

In its career our little dear might really go far.
A scientist, a senator, a soap opera star.
        A trustworthy tradesman laying cement.
        The first honest president.

Six weeks and counting will bring to an end
Waiting for the day we meet our tiny new friend.
Despite intense speculation of what it might be
My husband and I have only one goal:
To see it grow up to be healthy and whole.

But till then we must accept
Our one guarantee:
There's a blue-eyed baby,
For sure not maybe,
A blue-eyed baby in me
