"It Must Be Christmas"  Copyright 2000 Jacqueline S. Levy

It must be Christmas.
Every brightly colored shop
Entices me to stop
And stare.

It must be Christmas.
My charge cards are maxed out
To prove beyond a doubt
I care.

        I cashed in my 401K
        For gifts for my family.
        They are surely worth
        The early withdrawal penalty.

It must be Christmas.
A time to give, not take,
And maybe even make
Amends.

And so this Christmas
I'll take out a second mortgage
To buy silly useless garbage
For my friends.

        And finally on Christmas day,
I'll praise our Lord in heaven.
        Open all my presents
        While declaring Chapter seven.

It must be Christmas.
For only Christmas,
Teaches me my sacred role
To be fiscally irresponsible.
In God We Trust.
