Solid wood decking made from either redwood or teak is designed (by nature!) to stand up to the elements. Unlike many composite deck materials, solid wood will not easily sag or delaminate when in contact with moisture or changes in temperature. With minimal, regular maintenance a reclaimed wood deck will outlast many alternate decking materials, while creating a rich environment of real wood.
During the past decade, consumers and manufacturers have expressed a growing interest in recycled building materials, including decking. There are now several types of decking made from recycled plastics and/or wood products, as well as others made from plastics such as vinyl. These wood/polymer composites are the decking of the future. No cracks, splinters, and you can use nearly every inch of the stuff. Presently, it costs about 3x more than treated pine, but it’s worth it in the long term.
