Artist Statement
Drawing on my life-long love of nature, my
prize-winning landscape quilts encompass a variety of surface
design techniques imparting realism. While researching my
book, Nature's Patterns, published by the Quilt Digest
Press in 1996, I became enamored by landscape quilts and my creative
journey began. I study nature as though I am looking through the
lens of a camera, setting up possible landscape scenes in my mind for
future reference. My inspirations come from many sources
including; photographs, greeting cards, photography books, calendars,
and impressionistic artist, Claude Monet.
My art is accomplished using many techniques including
my original "cut and glue" technique of raw edge machine appliqué,
textile painting, stamping, sponging, dyeing, extensive machine
embroidery and thread-work, three-dimensional bonding, overlays of tulle
and polyester organza for shading and depth. Each landscape is
completed using free-motion machine quilting that compliments the design
and marries the three-layers together into a cohesive piece. My
books, Beautifully Embellished Landscape & Luscious Landscapes,
Simple Techniques for Dynamic Quilts and my DVD, published by
C&T Publishing, celebrate my methods of creation and feature both my
quilts and student work. |

Happenings
You'll notice I've added a few more
quilts to my gallery, tossed in some new photos in "Fun Stuff" and have
added a calendar link so you can see where and when I'll be teaching and
lecturing in your area.
As we speak, I'm getting ready to
jet off to Hawaii with my husband, Donald for our annual fun in the sun
vacation. We stay at Bellows AFS (a military recreation facility)
on Oahu in little cottages very close to the beach. We are lulled
to sleep by the pounding surf and wake to the sounds of the birds
chirping in the "woods" nearby. This yearly vacation is a time for
us to totally get away from the rat race, take long walks on the beach,
read, swim, and basically do nothing! With my red hair and fair
skin, I load up on #50 sunscreen and sit in the shade, but love the warm
tropical breezes and relaxing environment. This vacation always
revitalizes me, sparking my creative juices to get busy and make more
quilts! My camera is always nearby to capture incredible scenes.
After some bookings in March, we
set sail on a nineteen-day Panama Canal Cruise with the Quilt Camp at
Sea group on Holland America, where I will be teaching a Tropical
Adventure workshop. This trip truly is a dream of a lifetime
and something I would never get to experience without quilting.
The workshop sample, Tropical Adventure, is a kit workshop.
The quilt Camp at Sea group offers many quilting cruises - check out
their web site at
www.quiltcampatsea.com for all the quilting cruise opportunities.
I am also looking forward to APNQ's
QuiltFest, August 8th, 9th, and 10th held at the Convention Center in
Seattle, Washington. As a founder and former board-member of this
organization, I am so proud of our regional judged and juried
event every other year. I will be presenting a lecture on August
8th, taking a workshop from Diane Gaudynski on August 9th, and seeing
the show on August 10th. If you have the opportunity to come to
Seattle and see this exhibit, do it! It is my absolute favorite
national show and it captures the true essence of Pacific Northwest
Quilt artists. For more information, go to

Other notable events
this year, I will be the Featured Artist for the
Leavenworth Quilt Guild Show in Leavenworth, WA in
September, a Guest Teacher at the Gig Harbor Quilt
Festival in October, fly to Georgia and Alabama for
several concurrent bookings in November, and will teach
at the International Quilt Festival in Houston, TX this
fall again.
Nothing is more
satisfying than to see the "light bulb" of creativity go
on with my students, and then see their beautiful
finished projects. I travel world-wide to teach
and lecture. If your group is interested in a
booking, feel free to "cruise" my web site and then
contact me at
JBecker3@hotmail.com. Specifics are included on this
web site, including workshop and lecture choices.
If you've taken my workshops, please, please, please,
keep on sending me photos of your finished landscapes.
Until next time ...
Fondly,
Joyce
R. Becker

On Life...
Words do not begin to
express the joy quilting and writing brings to my spirit. When
students discover a new found capacity for creativity, it brings me full
