Dad moved to one of the six new barracks built near the Base Dispensary, typical barracks, two beds beside each other, two lockers dividing the two beds, about twenty four guys on each side with the latrine at one end and a lounge at the other. Now Dad was learning Spanish from the guy bunked next to him, and he made new friends. James Morrow, Jack Herring and Claus Hauboldt were working in the Dispensary with Dad and another character, Andy Petock, was driving ambulance. Andy was the camp scrounge. He bought and sold everything; if you needed it, he could get it. The Black Market King, boy from Brooklyn and Dead End Kid. There were many more personnel now at the base.

There were four Dispensaries. One was near the barracks. One was in the Headquarters Compound, used mainly by the Officers, open only in the morning for sick call. One was in the AVG (American Volunteer Group) Compound. And one was near the Airfield, the Base Dispensary. This is where the 803rd Medical Squad was situated. Dad remembers it was with Doctor John Quinlan. He remembers two of the nurses from the Headquarters Dispensary were named Lt. Randy Rast and Lt. Addie Newland.

The Base had grown considerably from when they had first arrived. He didn’t get to town much anymore. He was working seven days a week. They had use of a Jeep during the day that Dr. Quinlan took home nights. There was a new Mess Hall and a new Church for all faiths, kind of an open air building with a roof over it. It was about this time he said he saw a Japanese prisoner who was there to be interrogated and all Dad could’ve done, he said, was thrown a typewriter at him since he never got another gun.
