Introduction: Fremont in Klamath County

John Charles Fremont led five expeditions into the American West in the 1840s and 1850s. He visited Oregon's Klamath County on two of these trips:

Fremont's First Visit. His first visit was while on his way home from reaching the end of the Oregon Trail during his second expedition in 1843. In this first of two articles we will focus on this first trip to the Klamath area in the winter of 1843.

Fremont's Second Visit. He again visited Klamath County on his third expedition in 1846 while stalling for time waiting for the Mexican War to begin. In this second article we will examine the violent altercations Fremont and his group had with the Native Americans they encountered around Upper Klamath Lake.

I would like to thank Pam Smith and the staff at Klamath County Museum in Klamath Falls for their assistance in my research for these articles.
