At war's outbreak, von  Müldner was company commander in the 1st Battalion, which was commanded by Major Freiherr von Massenbach (who later commanded the 90th Fusilier-Regt). As the war continued, von Müldner was promoted to major and commanded 2nd Battalion during the battle at Chemin-des Dames, spring 1917. He resigned his commission in December 1917 as a lieutenant-colonel and was honored with the decoration of the Hohenzollern House Order with Swords.
