Prussian staff officer Georg Wetzell served for a time as III. Army Corps Chief of Staff subordinate to Fabeck's First Army. He then followed Gerhard Tappen in 1916 as Operations Section Chief with von Hindenburg at German Supreme Army Command (Oberste Heeresleitung). In this function, Wetzell was awarded the Pour le Mérite during the campaign against Italy. He was sent back to the field for the final two months of the War to serve as von der Marwitz' Chief of Staff in the Fifth Army.

After the Great War, Wetzell was the Inspector of the Germany Reichswehr Signal Troops from 1921 to 1926, and then headed of the Reichswehr General Staff. General Wetzell retired from military service with the honorary rank of General der Infanterie. He remained active in Reichswehr affairs through his founding of the Deutsche Wehr military magazine. Wetzell was dispatched to Nanking, China in 1930, where he served for four years a military advisor in the Chinese armed forces. Finally, in addition to editing and writing numerous articles and periodicals on German military and political affairs, Wetzell functioned as the Editor in Chief of Militär-Wochenblatt from 1934 to 1942. General Wetzell passed away in 1947 in the city of Augsburg.
