Imperial Prussian field marshal of Pommeranian nobility, General von Lindequist was born into the house of Lieutenant Colonel Karl von Lindequist and his wife Lony von Mayer, who died when young Oskar was 8 years of age. In 1867, Oskar married Anna von Podewils of the Woitzel dynasty. Lindequist began his military service in 1857 and by 1872 had been promoted to the position of aide-de-camp to Kaiser Wilhelm I.  He later commanded the Palace Guard (1879) and served as commander of 1.Garderegiment zu Fuß in Potsdam. 

Upon his promotion to Generalleutnant, von Lindequist began service as Kaiser Wilhelm II's adjutant general, also commanding the 21st Infantry Division in Stuttgart. Remaining in that city, he was promoted General der Infanterie and headed up the XIII. Army Corps. Serving as Inspector General of the 3rd Army District in Hannover, von Lindequist received his promotion to Generaloberst in 1906, and five years became Generaloberst with the rank of Generalfeldmarschall. Von Lindequist was the recipient of the Schwarzer Adler-Orden (Order of the Black Eagle). From 1910 through 1914, Generaloberst von Lindequist functioned as the director on the Kyffhäuser-Bund, Germany's Military Veterans Society. Additionally, from 1911 until his death in 1915, he served as a member in the Preussisches Herrenhaus, the Prussian House of Lords.
