Royal Bavarian general officer Otto Jäger was in command of Bavaria's 9th Infantry Brigade as the Germans marched into World War One. General Jäger remained on the Western Front through 1916 as commander of this brigade, which was subordinate to General von Gebsattel's III. Bavarian Army Corps. As a recipient of the Militär-Max-Joseph Knight's Cross in January 1915, Jäger was elevated into Bavaria's non-hereditary nobility, thereafter carrying the title of Ritter. He then functioned for the final two years of the War as the Governor of Germersheim.
