German general and military attache, Freiherr von Hoiningen-Huene continued with his pre-War command of XIV. Corps during the first month of the Great War, subordinate to von Heeringen's Seventh Army in the southern sector of the Western Front. He was soon transferred to Antwerp in Belgium, however, where he functioned as military governor until Armistice on 11 November 1918. 

Raised in catholic aristocratic family from the Grafschaft Mark (County of Mark), he entered military service in 1868. In 1886, Hoiningen-Huene was sent to Paris as military attache. He had become a trusted advisor to Chief of General Staff Alfred von Waldersee, and used his diplomatic position in Paris to conspire to put a negative spin on Reichskanzler Otto von Bismarck's foreign policy. Waldersee passed on reporting from his various military attaches to then Prince Wilhelm, contributing greatly to Chancellor Bismarck's downfall in the spring of 1890 when Wilhelm ascended to the throne as Kaiser. He died in March 1924 in the city of Darmstadt.
