place of birth:  Neisse, Oberschlesien  (Nysa, Poland)


Silesian general of infantry who upon mobilization was in command of 2nd Guards Infantry Division (attached to Buelow's Second Army) on the Western Front. As commander of IV. Reserves (1915-16), he was awarded the Pour le Merite in for distinguished service during the Austro-German invasion of Serbia. He later replaced Gallwitz as commanding general of the Eleventh Army.
