German Field Artillery  -  1914-1918

 



 

  
Total divisional artillery power at war's outbreak included 72 guns, 18 of which were light field howitzers. Beginning in 1915, divisional artillery power decreased to 36 guns, with 12 light field howitzers.
 
In 1916, a foot artillery battalion was added to each infantry division,  including one battery of 100mm canon and two batteries of 150mm howitzers. This provided the division with its own heavy artillery.
 

 

 Infanteriebekaempfungsartillerie  (IKA):  provided close support for  infantry.  75% of artillery guns were assigned to IKA
 
 Artilleriebekaempfungsartillerie  (AKA):  tasked with counter-battery fire
 
 Fernkampfartillerie  (FEKA):  tasked with hitting command posts, ammo dumps and reserve concentrations
 
 Schwereste Flachfeuerartillerie  (SCHWELFA):  heaviest guns which targeted bridges and reinforced command posts. Included own air observation and survey units
