Philipp Heinrich Scheidemann German Social Democrat
and Chancellor of the Weimar Republic. Member of the Reichstag from
1898 and of Prince Max's cabinet. On 9 November 1918, he proclaimed the
German republic without the knowledge and approval of Chancellor Ebert.
He later succeeded Ebert as chancellor of the provisional government,
resigning four months later to protest the Versailles Treaty.
Afterwards, he served as the mayor of Kassel but fled to Denmark when
the National Socialists took power. He remained in Copenhagen until his
death on 29 November 1939.
