Intelligent and talented Prussian field marshal and prince of the house of Brunswick, known as Ferdinand, duke of Brunswick. In 1744 he was appointed commander of King Friedrich II's Lifeguard, fighting with distinction at Sohr. He fought brilliantly in the Seven Years War, notably by his victories at Krefeld (1758) and Minden (1759), for which he was promoted field marshal. He was Frederick the Great
's brother-in-law
