Ferdinand Maximilan Charles Leopold Marie, Czar of Bulgaria (2.26.1861 – 10.9.1948) place of birth: Vienna Generalfeldmarschall: 18 January 1916 The Czar of Bulgaria from 1908 to 1918, after being Bulgaria's ruling prince from 1887 to 1908. Ferdinand I. was the grandnephew of Ernest I. of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, he was chosen prince of Bulgaria after the enforced abdication of Prince Alexander. In 1915 Ferdinand became Germany's ally in hopes that he gain back most of Macedonia, which had been lost to Serbia and Greece during the Second Balkan War of 1913. Kaiser Wilhelm II. named him an honorary general field marshal of the Prussian Army in January 1916. The tide of war turned against Bulgaria by 1917, however, and in September 1918 Bulgaria's front crumbled before an Allied multi-national force. Ferdinand was thus forced to abdicate in favor of his son, Boris III. and went into exile, spending most of the rest of his life in Coburg, Germany. He died there in September 1948 and is buried in St. Augustin’s Catholic Church.
