The Grand Duke ruled Hessia from 1877 until his death in 1892. He served in the military as colonel general with the rank of field marshal, achieving that rank in September 1891. Following his death in March 1892 in Darmstadt, he was succeeded by his son Ernst Ludwig IV. who served as Hessia's last Regent.
