Edwin Hans Karl Freiherr von Manteuffel

Generalfeldmarschall:  19 September 1873


Resourceful and capable Prussian field marshal and baron who served in the Danish War (1864) and was appointed Prussian governor in conquered Schleswig. In the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 he commanded brilliantly, and in the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71) he likewise distinguished himself. Manteuffel commanded the German army of occupation in France (1871–73) and from 1879 until his death was governor of Alsace-Lorraine. He died on 17 June 1885 in Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic) while on a spa holiday. Edwin was the first cousin of Baron Otto von Manteuffel.
