Prussian cavalry general von Bülow succeeded Sigismund von Schlichting in 1896 as commander of XIV. Army Corps.  Earlier in his career, von Bülow had served as personal military instructor to young 
Prince Wilhelm von Hohenzollern, and continued as his aide-de-camp when he became Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1888. 

Adolf von Bülow was initially associated with the 3rd Guards Uhlan Regiment in Potsdam and was later promoted to head up a cavalry brigade. He then served as VIII. Corps Commander from 1895 to 1896.
