General von Sperling was an Imperial Prussian general officer who was the governor of Cologne and briefly served as deputy commander at the corps level. He was the eldest son of General Oskar von Sperling (1824-99), and his sister Gertrud was the wife of Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg.

After taking part in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, von Sperling became a general staff officer and a commander at the various levels. After attaining the rank of General der Infanterie à la suite, he then functioned as Military Governor of Cologne from May 1907 to April 1911. At the outbreak of the Great War, von Sperling was Kurt von Pritzelwitz' deputy commander at VI. Army Corps HQ in Breslau before unexpectedly dying one month later.
