Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Leopold August Graf von Werder (12.9.1808 - 12.9.1887) place of birth: Schloßberg, Norkitten, Ostpreußen (East Prussia) Graf von Werder began his military career in 1825 when he joined the Gardes du Corps Regiment in Potsdam. As a young lieutenant volunteer, von Werder took part in the 1842-43 Russian campaign in the Caucasus and then returned to Germany to serve at Great General Staff headquarters in Berlin. During the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, von Werder was charged with commanding the 3rd Infantry Division which saw action at Gitschin and Königgrätz. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, General Graf von Werder was placed in command of both the occupational troops in Strasbourg, Alsace, as well as the Fourteenth Army Corps. Following the war in France, he returned to celebrate his 50th year of military service in 1875 and was later ennobled as Graf (Count) von Werder. General Graf von Werder died in September 1887 at Gut Grüssow in Belgard, Pomerania. |
