Arthur William Patrick Albert, Duke of Connaught and
Strathearn
(01.05.1850 - 16.01.1942)
place of birth: London, England
Generalfeldmarschall: 9 September 1906
das Vereinigte Königreich
Seventh child born to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert,
his name was given to him by his godfather the Duke of Wellington, hero
of Waterloo. Having such a role model of course made a great
impression on young Arthur, so he was early on destined for a military
career.
Arthur entered the service as a 16-year old, and his career
took him to places such as Canada, Egypt, South Africa and India. In
1874, his mother pronounced him Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, and in
1879 he married Princess Lousie Marguerite, grand-niece of Kaiser
Friedrich III. of Prussia. In September 1906 he received ceremonial
promotion to field marshal of the Prussian Army. His relatively
heavy involvement in German affairs is most likely the reason that
Arthur was sent to Canada from 1911 until 1916 where he served as Great
Britain's Governor General and Supreme Commander while the situation
with Germany deteriorated. Arthur died at Baghshot Park, Surrey, in
January 1942 at the age of 91.
