Prussian War Minister and General der Infanterie Georg von Kameke began his military career within the ranks of the Pioniere (combat engineers) and later served on the Prussian General Staff. He was awarded the Pour le Merite in September 1866 for distinguished service during the Austro-Prussian War. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, he commanded the 14th Infantry Division which was considered the vanguard of the First Army. His contingent took part in the battles for Metz and Thionville, as well as the Siege of Paris. Thereafter, Kameke served as Prussian War Minister for a ten year period. He replaced Count von Roon in January 1873 on provisional basis, officially be named to the post in September of that same year.
