Prussian War Minister and General der Infanterie who began
his military career within the ranks of the Pioniere (combat
engineers) and later served on the Prussian General Staff. He was
awarded the Pour le Merite in September 1866 for distinguished
service during the Austro-Prussian War. During the Franco-Prussian
War of 1870, he commanded the 14th Infantry Division which was
considered the vanguard of the First Army. His contingent took part in
the battles for Metz and Thionville, as well as the Siege
of Paris. Kameke then served as Prussian War Minister from 1873 to
1883, replacing Count von Roon who had resigned due to poor health.
