Day 4, Stage 4
Tuesday, June 28, 2005
Hotel: Holiday Inn
Weather: Very hot and hazy, in the 90s

The team continues to improve! Our score today was 32 seconds which placed us 5th in Sportsman Division and 25th overall for the day. We had the potential of a much better score except for a problem that occurred on the second leg. We were following a veteran very experienced team and they actually made a serious mistake. They made a speed change at the wrong sign, slowing from 45 to 25 at the wrong place and blocking the road in front of us. We were also forced to slow down and initially thought that we must have made the mistake. They quickly realized their error and roared away, but we had failed to account for all our time loss and this resulted in a 21-second score for this leg. Scores for the other three legs were a very respectable 2, 5, and 4 seconds. Each of the legs was very long with the 2-second score coming on a leg of 2 hours, 16 minutes.

A typical rally road in the farm belt
This was a very long day - we spent 10 hours on the rally route from Louisville to Urbana. Except for the initial speedometer calibration run on the interstate, the only prime highway traveled was a short piece of US 50 through Vincennes and across the Wabash River into Illinois. The remainder of the route was through the backroads of the farmlands of southern Indiana and Illinois. The corn crop looks good this year!

The morning pit stop was in the little town of Ferdinand, IN where we were escorted by the Boy Scouts and the local ladies of the Red Hat Society into the food area where we sampled turtle soup and bratwurst sandwiches. We also were routed through the grounds of the large Best Chair factory whose owner just happens to be Great Racer Clem Lange, Car #20.

An outstanding buffet lunch was hosted by the town of Washington, IN. Our host, Tony Potts, arranged for Dawn to have the unexpected pleasure of getting her photo taken with a local celebrity, Rupert, of Survivor fame.

Another surprise awaited us at the afternoon pit stop in Marshall, Illinois, when Indiana relatives greeted us as we arrived. Jerry's wife's cousin, Garnet Reed with wife MaryAnn and grandchildren, Lauren and Logan, drove over to see us and enjoy the festivities.

Dawn and the Gilbreaths
The parc fermé in Urbana was very well attended and featured live entertainment. We also were greeted with more Indiana relatives. Jerry's dad's cousin, Gene Gilbreath, with wife Stella and grandson Jason drove more than two hours from Indiana to be on hand to see us cross the finish line here.

Tomorrow's draw put our starting position at number 93 so we will be bringing up the rear of the pack. At least we will be able to sleep in a little longer.
