Bio for Kay Allen Szafranski
After graduation, I went to work for Lindsey Insurance Agency in Helena. Married Fred
Cromwell in April, 1957 and we had 3 wonderful children. Peggy is now a teacher at Benton
High School, and lives at Maumelle (not far from Louise & Bill Cremeen). Ricky is an Asst Mgr
at Wal-Mart at McCain in North Little Rock. He and his wife live in Bryant with their precious
daughter Brooklynn, who is 2. Michael is Asst Gen Manager at Wal-Mart Distribution in
Bentonville. He is married to Michelle and they have two children, Mason who is 8 and Kaylee
who is almost 6. I started working at Mohawk for a few years and then was lucky enough to be
hired at Social Security Admin in Helena as a Clerk-Typist.
After Fred and I divorced in 1970, I
found Helena-West Helena to be too small with too many in-laws and out-laws, so I packed up
my children and we moved to Searcy when they opened a Social Security office here. That was
one of the best moves I ever made! I was promoted to Supervisor and then Branch Manager. In
1976, I met (on a blind date) my husband, Harry (Ski) and we just celebrated our 27th
anniversary. He is retired Air Force and then worked for Ark Dept of Health for several years.
Ski has 7 children, so our family really grew when we joined together. His children have become
my own over the years and we have just a wonderful relationship. In all, there are 14
grandchildren. Six live in Florida and South Georgia, so our visits there aren't as frequent as we
would like. The rest all live here in Searcy, Cabot, Bryant and Bentonville.
I retired from Social
Security in 1987 and stayed home for about a year. Got bored and went to work for Ark. Dept of
Health at a small clinic in Beebe. I worked there for 12 years and my last retirement was in
December, 2000. We are enjoying our retirement, but stay quite busy with volunteer work, our
church, bowling and grandchildren. I have been Secretary-Treasurer for our volunteer Gum
Springs Volunteer Fire Dept since Sept, 1987! Ski is Secretary for the Jacksonville Bowling
Association, so those jobs keep us busy. We attend St. Paul United Methodist Church here in
Searcy and are very active there. Ski had a quadruple bypass in 2002 and has done very well. I
got new knees..total right knee in Jan, 04 and partial left knee in March 05. Still not dancing, but
at least I can walk without pain! We both look forward to the reunion next year and this website
that Jim has created is just wonderful.
