When I left high school I was married for a short time then divorced and moved to Houston in
1962. I worked in the Independent School District there in the adult education division.. Then in
1965 I moved back to Little Rock. I became one of the original 4 who started adult education in
Arkansas. When we started adult education, we had 2000 adults on the rolls the first year. But
we had 72,000 when I retired.
I worked in adult education for 26 years. I retired in May 2001 and found out I had breast
cancer in August. I underwent radiation therapy, which was successful. But recently the cancer
came back, and I had a double mastectomy in January
I had already had a slight stroke two years ago that resulted in the cleaning of both carotid
arteries, the roto rooter treatment. But I have very little residual effect from it, just some slight
numbness in the tips of some fingers.
Now I do a lot of work in my church. I was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Helena,
along with Betty, Bill Ellis, Money and Sissy Raspberry, and my sorority big sister, Peggy Howe.
She and Jimmy Webster just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. But now I'm in the
Methodist Church. I volunteer a lot of time. I'm on the Finance Committee right now. But I am
involved in many church activities. I try to keep busy all the time.
I am feeling great and traveling a lot. I cut two yards every week. I have a neighbor with serious
back problems, and cut that yard as well as my own. I also have a very good friend in Mountain
Home, who travels with me a lot. I go up and see him frequently to get away.
I'm supposed to see my Oncologist on April 25th, and I will need to see what he has to say before
I can decide whether I can make it to the reunion. But I get all the emails and read them every
day, and am on the web site reading the bios.
