After graduating from Central High School, I attended the University of Miami in Coral Gables,
Florida. It was quite a transition from Helena, Arkansas to Miami in 1956. That was my first
airplane ride, dressed from head to toe with hat and gloves. What I was not aware of at the time
was that 90% of the student population was from the northeast and I felt out of place for awhile.
Eventually, I adjusted, met other southern students, and lasted all four years. The experience
certainly enlightened me to a whole new world and I am very thankful for that opportunity.
In 1960, after Miami, I moved to Houston. It was a growing town. I lived with relatives for a
year or so, working at Shell Oil Company and becoming somewhat independent. I spent five
years working at Shell during which time I met my husband. I think it was set up :) because his
sister lived next door to my aunt and uncle...so we met and dated for quite a while.
In 1966 I married David Pasternack in Helena at the Temple Beth El. We made our home in
Houston where David and his partner owned Cactus Pipe and Supply Co. A year later we
welcomed our son, Marcus who in 1974 was joined by his sister, Karen. Marcus now lives in
Cambridge where he attended Berklee College of Music, and is now a struggling musician.
Karen presently is in New York, having graduated from the University of Texas, working at MTV
for two years, returning to Houston to work in the fashion business, and consequently returning
to New York to attend Parsons School of Design.
Unfortunately after 33 years of marriage, my husband developed colon cancer and died in April
1999. I continued to live in our home until recently when it became too big for one person.
Presently, I am in a townhouse in a nice gated area of Houston and although it has been a big
transition, I am getting used to it.
The last few years, I discovered Ballroom Dancing....it has become my new hobby
I have had a great life. Our family traveled a lot together going to Europe many times, taking
cruises, taking a safari in Africa, surfing in Hawaii, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and other
parts of the South Pacific. And, eating our way through each country.
My husband was quite the gourmet and I learned, later in life, to enjoy oysters, lobster, and
escargot, truffles, etc. etc. etc.
Now my taste buds have normalized and my life style has simplified. I have been blessed with
wonderful family, a fabulous brother and sister-in-law, , and many devoted and supportive
friends.
Although Houston is growing and growing, I suppose it will continue to be home base. Who
knows, maybe my children will someday be back.
