Hi Everyone, it is marvelous the way Jim has put this site together.
My story is very short and simple. As you know I married Robert McCurley the summer before
graduation. My family was moving out of town (Robert and I just could not bear the thought of
separation) so we eloped and I lied about my age the same way I did when I started working at
the Malco Theater in Helena. Habitual story teller it seems. Our only child (a daughter) was born
3 years later- Carmen Diane on Christmas Eve. Tennie Lee Oxner had a son at the same time. It
was so funny they kept bringing the wrong babies to us. I guess we were the only 2 in the hospital
at that time.
Robert worked for Graber's Dept. Store and was transferred to Jackson, Tn. about a year later. He
was always in the retail business. Clothes was his thing. I went to business school in Jackson and
went to work for the County Court Clerks office there. I worked numerous years for them and
held two positions after that. Grabers sold their stores and Robert bought the one in Jackson. We
operated the store for over 20 years there and enjoyed every minute of it. Robert died of cancer 6
years ago.
I am working full time at Bank of America and love it. I live in Smyrna, Tn with my daughter.
She thinks I am senile and cannot take care of myself. ha ha I take ballroom dance lessons as a
hobby and have been been having a ball. My health is excellent so far which I thank the Lord for
everyday. I can really sympathize with everyone who has had cancer to touch their lives. I love
reading about all of you. I am still a fan of Arkansas and go every chance I can. My favorite area
is Heber Springs, AR. If I ever retire, that is my choice.
