Bio for L. B. Haws Jr.

L. B. Haws, Jr. was born in West Helena, AR on 17 September 1938 and received his early education in the Helena-West Helena Public Schools. He graduated from Purdue University in 1960 with a BS degree in Aeronautical Engineering. After graduation, he was commissioned into the Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant. His first assignment was propulsion engineer on the Atlas Missile at Cape Canaveral, Florida where he was on the launch crew for Atlas E & F R&D rockets. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1962 and was reassigned to the Air Force Plant Representative Office at General Dynamics Astronautics (GDA) in San Diego, CA, where he was project officer for the Atlas weapon programs. He attended Squadron Officer School at Maxwell AFB, AL, in 1965 and while there was promoted to Captain. LB entered Arizona State University in the summer of 1965 and graduated with an MS in Engineering in 1968.

Between the summer and fall sessions at Arizona State in 1965, LB and Jackie Karcher were married. LB had met Jackie in the Space Station project at GDA. While they were dating, there was an embarrassing incident for LB. Jackie and his boss watched him have dry heaves, over closed circuit TV, while he was riding a centrifuge for three hours.

His next assignment was to NORAD, Colorado Springs, CO, where he was an analyst responsible for developing software for the NORAD computer systems.

In 1969, he was assigned to Secretary of the Air Force Office of Special Projects (SP), SAMSO, Los Angeles AFS, CA. There he developed and managed ground data processing systems for military space programs. While in SP, he was promoted to Major. David was born in 1972. When visiting LB at work, David followed LB's secretary into a secure area. This posed an interesting problem on what to do when security is breached by a two year old. His next assignment at SAMSO was to the ABRES Program where he managed the integration, test, and launch of Minuteman I missiles from Vandenburg AFB to the South Pacific in support of reentry vehicle development for the Air Force, Army, and Navy. While there, he was promoted to Lt. Colonel.

In 1978, LB was assigned to the Foreign Technology Division (FTD) at Wright-Patterson AFB (WPAFB), OH. His first job at FTD was Chief of the Aerodynamic Propulsion Branch. His next job was Chief of Avionics Branch where he supported all three services. LB then went to the PRAM Program Office in the Aeronautical Systems Division (ASD) at WPAFB. There, he managed projects to reduce Air Force operations and support costs and to improve operational readiness. His next assignment at ASD was Deputy Director, New Engines Program Office. There, he managed new engine developments and was Program Management Chief for engine source selection for the Joint Advanced Fighter. As personal computers were becoming available in the mid-1980s, LB began assisting in the efforts to bring office automation to the Deputy for Propulsion office. Because of his knowledge and expertise, he was given a new position, Director of Office Automation. In this position, he directed the planning, acquisition, and implementation of office automation hardware and software for 450 personnel.

LB retired from the Air Force in November, 1987. He had planned to work for one of the aerospace companies that he had worked with during his Air Force career. Although many doors for employment opened, they soon closed. While living in OH, the family attended Dayton Baptist Temple where LB was a deacon and treasurer for Temple Christian School (TCS). Jackie taught junior high and senior high school math and computer at TCS. LB also worked the church sound system and video taped many of the church services and special events. The time of unemployment allowed LB to spend more time with David and to attend all of David's basketball games and video tape them.

In the summer of 1989, LB was hired by a long time friend from the Air Force and went to work for The Boeing Company in Aurora, CO. As Boeing was just starting in Aurora, LB directed and coordinated the initial review and approval of 1500 procedures. He then became a subsystem analyst where he developed procedures for rehearsals and tests. His final job at Boeing was operations controller, responsible for testing software, hardware, and human-machine interfaces.

In CO, the family attended South Sheridan Baptist Church, where LB became a deacon, worked in the media room, and video taped events. Jackie taught math and computer in Silver State Baptist School, where David continued in basketball and graduated in 1990. LB video taped David's basketball games as well as the girls' basketball and volleyball games. David and his fiance, Janine Larkin, attended Maranatha Baptist Bible College and graduated in 1995. They were married in June, 1995.

LB retired from Boeing in September, 2000. He had planned to search for another job after settling his parents' estate. However, in September 2001, he, Jackie, their associate pastor, and twelve other families went to Parker, CO, and founded Grace Baptist Church. LB and Jackie have been very busy in the church. LB became the first treasurer and one of the first deacons. LB and two other men have been the "advance guard" of the church's building committee. In 2005, their efforts resulted in the purchase of 17.5 acres in the middle of Parker. Many miracles, starting fifteen years ago, enabled the purchase at a price less than half of what it could have cost. The "advance guard" is now visiting churches under construction and talking to an architect. Financing, design, and construction should begin soon on a 400 plus seating church building.

David and Janine have blessed LB and Jackie with two granddaughters: Katie in 2001 and Kristi in 2005. David is the payroll manager at Ciber, located within two miles of LB's and Jackie's home. Jackie has retired from teaching, but substitutes when asked. She keeps busy with church activities, quilting, and is getting into scrapbooking. LB is busy with the church, particularly the pursuit of a building. He continues to video tape various events and is now converting the tapes to DVDs. LB hikes often in the mountains and foothills of CO and participates in black powder shoots and rendezvous.
