After graduation, I worked one year at the Helena Compress before going to Arkansas A & M at
Monticello. While at A & M I met Millie Johnson(my future wife) from Crossett,Ark. Millie was
working on her Home Economic Degree but after two years she had to transfer to Arkansas State
Teachers in Conway to complete it. I stayed at A & M and graduated in 1962 with an Industrial
Management Degree.
I came back to West Helena and worked for Mohawk Rubber Co, for about 6 months while
Millie was teaching in Arizona. We got married in June of 1963 and moved to Dallas job
hunting.
I went to work for the S. S. Kresge Co. (parent company of K-Mart) and we lived in Dallas for
about 18 months before getting transferred to a K-Mart in Santa Ana, Calif .then to Visalia,
Caif..then to Costa Mesa, Calif.
My first store was a Jupiter Store in Janesville,Wisc, .second store was a Kresge Store in
Milwaukee and the third store was a Kresge Store in Arlington Hts., Illinois. From Illinois I was
transferred to Sherman,Tx., as co-manager of a K-Mart and the next transfer was to
Bartlesville,Ok. to open and manage the K-Mart here.
In 1979 after about 16 years with K-Mart we decided to move no more and I went to work for
Bartlesville Stationery Co. for about 7 years before going to work for the Phillips Petroleum Co.
In 2002 after about 14 years with Phillips, I retired as an Evironmental Technician.
Millie and I have three married children and five grandchildren.
George! (the oldest) lives in Calif. and is retiring from the Navy in August. (They have one girl.)
Gary lives here in B'ville, works for the Seimen Co. and they have one boy.
Martha teaches English in Enid, Ok., and they have two girls and a boy. (Martha is graduating
with her Masters in May.)
Millie taught for awhile before the kids came along and later years she became the Church
Hostess for our church, the First Baptist. (Millie just retired this past year after 26 years)
God has truly Blessed us with our kids and grandkids and we have a wonderful church family.
Arkansas will always be dear to us, (I've got my Razorback license plate on the front of our van)
but after about 30 years here in Bartlesville, Oklahoma . this is home.
