JOHN SALLIS received a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Tulane University and subsequently pursued
postdoctoral studies at the University of Freiburg (Germany) and the University of Paris. He
served as Chair of the Philosophy Department at Duquesne Univeristy and has held endowed
Chairs at Loyola University of Chicago, Vanderbilt University, and Pennsylvania State
University. Beginning in September 2005, he will be Frederick Adelman Professor of
Philosophy at Boston College. In addition, he has been Visiting Professor at the University of
T_bingen and the University of Freiburg.
Dr. Sallis is the author of fifteen books. Among the most recent are Platonic Legacies (2004),
On Translation (2002), Force of Imagination (2000), Chorology (1999), and Shades--Of Painting
at the Limit (1998). He has edited more than fifty volumes. His work has been translated into
more than a dozen languages. He has lectured extensively throughout North America and
Europe, as well as in Brazil, China, Japan, and Thailand.
The Sallises have two children, Lauren, who lives in Germany, and Kathryn, who lives in
Chicago. They have five grandchildren
