Bio for Alan Sugg and Jean (Bussell) Sugg. (Also posted under Jean Bussell)
After graduation in 1956, Alan attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville on a track
scholarship. I attended Memphis State University-now the University of Memphis---one year and then
transferred to Fayetteville. We both majored in business and graduated on June 4, 1960. Four days later
we were married in the First Baptist Church in West Helena. Ten days after graduation, we were at Fort
Hood, Texas in the Army Infantry. Alan had accepted his Regular Army Commission, so he entered the
military as a 2nd Lt., and we got to choose our first permanent station. That was Germany.
After Alan's basic training and paratrooper school at Fort Benning Georgia, we got settled in
Worms, Germany for the next three years. Worms is a beautiful old town. We lived with a German family
about 6 weeks before moving into military housing. Worms is where the Diet of Worms took place and
where Martin Luther was tried for promoting Protestantism after nailing his 95 theses to the door of the
Wittenberg Church---thereby starting the Reformation.
Between Alan's being away on maneuvers and my teaching GI's in the Army Education Center,
we managed to travel Europe a bit--- 2 trips to Italy (down both coasts), 2 trips to Paris and the chateaux
country, Belgium, Holland, Luxemburg, and East Berlin before the wall came down.
We had our older daughter Katie in Heidelberg. She is now 42 years old, married to an attorney,
and living inside the loop in Houston, Texas. Our other daughter, Jenifer, was born a year later at Fort
Hood, Texas. She and her husband live in The Woodlands, Texas area, and they have our two
grandsons Jackson and Mitchell ages 12 and 10 respectively. Jenifer's husband is a partner with Ernst
and Young.
Both daughters and their husbands are Longhorns. They all graduated from the University of
Texas at Austin.
After Germany and a six month assignment back at Fort Hood, Alan resigned from the Army, and
we went back to Fayetteville. Alan managed the Student Union for one year, and then worked as
Assistant to the Vice President for Finance for two years. During this time, he also got his Masters Degree
in Student Personnel Administration.
From there, we went to Texas for almost 23 years. First, we were at East Texas State University
in Commerce, Texas, where Alan was Assistant to the President. He took a leave of absence, and we
moved to Norman, Oklahoma for 9 months to establish his residency for his PhD in Higher Education
Administration. He completed his doctoral degree in 1972, just in time for us to move to Corpus Christi,
Texas, where he was Academic Vice President at the newly created Corpus Christi State University. This
campus along with the South Texas University System became part of the Texas A & M University System
in 1989. At that time, Alan was serving as President of the Corpus Christi campus and as Chancellor of
the South Texas System.
We loved Corpus Christi, and that is where our girls grew up, graduated high school, went on to
college, and then went to Houston to live. During our time there when we weren't enjoying the beach and
sun, I worked for a cotton broker---a great job!
In 1990, we moved back home to Arkansas. Alan became President of the University of
Arkansas System, and his office was located in Little Rock. The System is composed of 6 main
campuses Fayetteville, Little Rock, Pine Bluff, Monticello, Fort Smith, and the Medical Center and
Hospital in Little Rock. Also included are the state agricultural system in Arkansas and five 2 year
campuses, one of which we are proud to say is Phillips Community College in Helena. Also, the Delta
Health Education Center in Helena, which is a part of the U. of A. System, is making a great difference
there.
Alan's present position keeps us both busy, but we truly love being back in Arkansas and renewing old
friendships.
