After completing my work in the University of Arkansas Department of Architecture, where I
earned two degrees, I relocated to New England to experience another part of the country. That
was during fall 1962, and I quickly became so fascinated with the northeast that I've never left.
While living in New England and working for five years with an architectural firm there, I met
my wife of more than 38 years: Darleen Berkowicz of Feeding Hills, Massachusetts. Darleen is
from a large, New England Polish family, and I even learned to polka!
After two years Darleen and I came here to Princeton, New Jersey, where I had an interview for a
position with another architectural firm. We were immediately enamored of Princeton, which I
believe to be one of the most beautiful
towns in the U.S. I was offered and accepted the position,
we moved to the area less than a month later and have lived here ever since. During 1979 we
moved into Princeton itself and we've lived and worked here for the past 25+ years. In addition
to being the home of Princeton University, the town of Princeton is almost exactly halfway
between New York & Philadelphia about an hour from each - and is 1-2 hours, depending upon
exact destination, from the Jersey Shore beaches & marinas.
I have three children, all of whom I'm very proud of. I have no grandchildren yet, although I'm
confident that I'll have at least one someday while I can still walk! My older daughter Artelia, by
a brief early marriage, graduated cum laude from Smith College in Northampton, MA with a
degree in Art History. She lives in New Hampshire, does editing for publishers by
telecommutation and hand-crafts silver jewelry.
My younger daughter, Elise, graduated with honors from the University of New Hampshire. One
week after graduation she left for Thailand under the sponsorship of an organization
called Princeton in Asia. She taught English at a Jesuit university in Bangkok for a year and a
half. While there, she visited Tibet & China, and climbed a mountain next to Everest. She's now
a Fashion Editor for Cosmopolitan Magazine in NYC (Manhattan), where she has an apartment
in the East (Greenwich) Village.
My son, Chris, graduated from Rutgers with a degree in Computer Science and is currently
working for the State of NJ in that field. He loves playing ice hockey, and he plays in an adult
league near Princeton. Last spring he traveled with his team to Montreal, where they played some
Canadian adult league teams and received instruction from a retired Canadiens player.
As for me, I've been truly fortunate. I've enjoyed a wonderfully fulfilling and very rewarding
career in architecture & planning. Highlights in NJ include: 1] More than 21 years with a large,
national now international firm here in Princeton, where I was a Principal for 11 years; 2] 5-
1/2 years as owner and President of my own firm, during which period I provided services for
Princeton University, including design of alterations to one of the University's beautiful, old
faculty houses, and 3] 5-1/2 years with the Princeton office of a Memphis-based firm. Our office
here focuses primarily on design of New Urbanism & Traditional Neighborhood Development
(TND) communities in areas of the northeast, southeast, Midwest and Canada. When I joined the
office there were six personnel; we have grown now to 18 architects, planners & support staff,
the office is still very much in a growth mode and we moved into new space just before
Christmas. My "grand finale" was managing the design & construction of, and move into, the
new office. As of January 1, I officially retired, although the firm has asked and I've agreed to
continue working on a consulting basis. I'm enjoying that continued, part-time involvement
("keeping my hand in") and I'm doing other, limited consulting work as well.
I served in the Air Force Reserve for 6 years as a member of the Connecticut Air National Guard
and received an honorable discharge with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Our field training was held
once in southern California and once in Germany. I've also performed other public service and
was awarded a September, 1998 Meritorious Public Service certificate for serving four years as a
member of the Supreme Court of New Jersey District Ethics Committee.
I'm still an auto enthusiast, which I've been for as long as I can remember. Early during our
marriage, Darleen & I became interested in sports cars and road course racing. We attended
numerous racing events in Lime Rock, CT and elsewhere, and were at the U.S. Grand Prix in
Watkins Glen, NY one of the years that Jackie Stewart won the World Driving Championship. I
participated in some TSD rally events, and even won a trophy once. That was all "BC" (before
children), of course. I've also continued and expanded my interest in amateur photography and
recently have become enthusiastically involved in (Read: addicted to) digital photography.
Combined with my equal enthusiasm for computers, digital photography is like having a
darkroom on a desktop!
Darleen & I have been privileged to travel extensively in Europe & Canada several times,
including: 1] A month-long drive through Switzerland, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and
England; 2] A 2-week stay at a friend's condominium on the North Sea coast of Belgium, 3] A
week in Old Town Quebec, where we were guests at Le Chateau Frontenac, and 4] Two weeks in
Italy & London last summer. In addition, I worked in Vienna for several weeks one summer, and
Darleen & I visited Salzburg & Budapest while there. We've visited and photographed many of
Europe's most revered buildings and public spaces, and have visited many of the world's great
art museums, including the Musei Vaticani & Sistine Chapel in Rome, the Galleria degli Uffizi
and Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Gallerie
dell'Accademia in Venice, the Louvre & Mus,e d'Orsay in Paris and, of course, the Metropolitan
Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Gallery in D.C.
We're true empty-nesters now, and we spend many pleasant summer weekends with friends at
the Jersey Shore, "beaching" or boating. Darleen's eight years younger than I and isn't ready to
retire yet. We're considering one more move when she is ready, however probably our last
move into an "active adult" community, preferably one designed by the firm from which I've
just retired. Meanwhile, I'm very pleased with the apparent success and fulfillment of so many
members of the Class of '56!
